After I got my PhD, I put my academic noscript on my frequent flyer card. Once a flight attendant discreetly asked if I could help a passenger who became unwell. Me: "Sorry, I'm a doctor in quantum physics. I cannot even help you If you're unsure whether your passenger's alive or dead"

Money quote: "Spotify is one of those apps – along with most products made by Meta – that people never feel entirely jazzed about using. Convenience, and its market saturation, mean that we are all forced to hush our misgivings about its exploitation of musicians whenever we open it. Luckily, this is where the focus of the final episode lies. The Ek we see here is Charles Foster Kane, brittle and aloof and so insulated by wealth that he has lost sight of what he ever wanted Spotify to be. In contrast, there’s a talented musician who can no longer pay her rent with the royalties she receives from streaming. It’s a necessary note for the series to strike, and one you wish took up more airtime."

The Playlist review – stick with it for the brain-breakingly weird ending
Netflix tells the origin story of Spotify, but Daniel Ek – the most powerful man in music – is no Steve Jobs. Still, it’s worth watching for the jolting discomfort you’ll feel after the finale

Queste note a margine su come sopravvivere all'internet surreale sono semplicemente oro.
Money quote: "Theorizing the Web is a weird and wonderful gathering where academics and technologists share their theories about wtf is happening online. The conference was started 9 years ago by a small group of tech-savvy cultural observers who wanted to take the internet seriously as an instigator of large-scale sociological change. (Back when Zuckerberg stayed far away from Congress and techno-optimists were praising Twitter for creating the Arab Spring). RadicalxChange is new on the scene — an eclectic mix of economists, policy wonks, activists, crypto nerds, and artists who are trying to think more creatively about how to improve our social institutions. Together, RadicalxChange + Theorizing the Web painted a surreal picture of how bad actors are creating weapons of information warfare to re-shape our world. I want to pass on my notes before they get too out of date."

Cos'è la psicoterapia? E come funziona?
Money quote: "Proponents of different forms of psychotherapy would likely agree that each approach helps people to better understand their thoughts, emotions and responses. Past experiences can affect present behaviour, and people can get caught up in unhelpful or inflexible patterns of responding to experiences, both internal and external. All therapies hold the shared purpose of bringing about change in these processes."

Forse no.

È morto Silvio Berlusconi, come sapete.
Money quote 1: "His enemies consistently underestimated him because of his crassness, and drove voters into his arms by making all too evident their disdain for his supporters. He masterfully made political conflicts all about him and turned judicial proceedings to his advantage by casting himself as a martyr, likening himself to Jesus Christ. Although he consistently failed to deliver on his promises to reverse economic stagnation and political decline, he was able to retain the loyalty of a large segment of the population and dominate Italian politics for two decades."
Money quote 2: ""Berlusconi’s greatest triumph is not that he became prime minister of Italy on three occasions, or that he was a senator when he died, or that he remained a free man and one of the richest people in the country despite all the prosecutions—and convictions. It is that he was the principal founder of a tradition of demagogic politics that has defined the modern era in some of the world’s largest democracies, including Turkey, Brazil, India, and even the United States."

Money quote 1: "If you were to search among tech review sites for a USB microphone recommendation, you'd almost definitely see a Blue product listed. Founded in 1995 and gaining consumer recognition with distinct designs, like the Snowball and Yeti, Blue Microphones branding has become well-known, from audiophiles to newcomers looking to launch their first podcast. But moving forward, the Blue Microphones brand will be no more."
Money quote 2: "Blue would go on to release other USB mics and earn the attention of hobbyists, reviewers, streamers, podcasters... and Logitech. Logitech bought Blue for $117 million.
Five years later, Logitech is axing the Blue Microphones name in favor of Yeti, the name of one of Blue's most popular mic series. Yeti mics will live under the broader Logitech G umbrella of PC peripherals and accessories historically aimed at gamers and streamers."

Money quote: "Using the same technology that powers chatbots like Microsoft’s Bing and OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Miller created a clone of his best friends’ group chat — a conversation that’s been unfurling every day over the past seven years, ever since he and five friends first came together in college. It was surprisingly easy to do, he says: a project that took a few weekends of work and a hundred dollars to pull together. But the end results are uncanny.
“I was really surprised at the degree to which the model inherently learned things about who we were, not just the way we speak,” says Miller. “It knows things about who we’re dating, where we went to school, the name of our house we lived in, et cetera.” "

Money quote: "Identificare opera e artista.

Money quote: "When I wrote “Level 2 Clean Install of Ventura Solves Deep-Rooted Problems” (10 April 2023), I stopped at the point of declaring—and I am not being smug about this, universe!—seeming victory over several previously intractable problems. What I glossed over was the remaining step of reinstalling third-party apps. It was tedious but fascinating because I learned precisely which apps I really use and the order I needed them. The start of this list is less indicative than the latter part: I installed many of the early apps more or less simultaneously and then added back other apps when the task for which I use them cropped up.
Here then, are the 46 apps I rely on (so far!), with a few words of explanation for each. Note that while I do recommend all of these apps individually, that’s partly because I pay for hardly any of them. If I were working under a typical budget, I would be somewhat more circumspect, particularly with multiple apps in the same category."
