Money Quote: ”In the year 2000, superhero movies were at the precipice of a mainstream revolution, and leading that charge were the X-Men. But this was a new millennium and a new format. The tight, stretchy outfits worn by the team in their comics and iconic '90s cartoon wouldn't do. Instead, these X-Men donned black leather bodysuits. And yet, even that wasn't cool enough for the most badass X-Man of them all. … When Hugh Jackman's Wolverine first joins the X-Men and sees those bodysuits for himself, he says, 'You actually go outside in these things?' Cyclops (James Marsden) replies, 'Well, what would you prefer? Yellow spandex?"

Why Do Superheroes Wear Spandex?
From Batman to the X-Men, superheroes and spandex were synonymous for decades. Then, everything changed.
Money quote: "People in industrialised societies spend up to 88% of time in enclosed buildings, resulting in 4-fold less natural light exposure during the day. To give you some perspective on this, light is measured in 'lux', and natural daytime light can be anywhere between 2,000 to 10,000 lux while average indoor lighting can be less than 500 lux, which lacks the minimum level of intensity for circadian entrainment. Recent associative studies have found that greater morning light exposure correlates to lower body fat levels and better appetite regulation"

Sapete cosa? È pure buono.
Money quote: "It can also be transformed into savory porridge—and one so reminiscent of pizza, it'll make you rethink what "oatmeal" can be. The first time I made it, its creamy consistency and ability to marry together all the flavors I threw into the pot made me think that it was a "poor man's risotto." But when I caught myself eating down the whole pot—that yields 4 very hearty servings, by the way—I realized that this, this was better than risotto."

Breads created to be made the same day can skip the pre-ferment the night before, and use a higher dose of instant, or active dry yeast, to make more gas in less time.

Money quote: "When I was growing up, Mortimer J. Adler championed “The Great Books of the Western World,” Clifton Fadiman promoted “The Lifetime Reading Plan” and every thrift store worth its salt carried a broken set of the Harvard Classics. All these enterprises were energized by one basic assumption: Civilization was on the ropes because fewer and fewer people engaged with the literature and intellectual achievements of the past. Instead, Americans — especially young Americans — were wallowing in ephemeral, popular amusements, which in the mid-20th century largely meant movies and television. Wouldn’t we all be better off devoting our evenings to Aristotle and Emily Dickinson?
Probably. Yet these well-intentioned literacy campaigns usually made reading sound like schoolwork. Far better, I now think, to emphasize that acquiring familiarity with humankind’s greatest cultural achievements, besides increasing one’s store of knowledge, lends an additional pleasure to life. After all, we read because it’s exciting. Metaphorically speaking, books are always taking us to the big city, opening our eyes to the world’s plenitude and diversity. By contrast, those who ban or censor them want to keep us down on the farm, restricting our experience to some safe or approved orthodoxy."

Money quote: "What made the movie Watership Down infamous was not the deep themes of its source material, but the graphic imagery. This is no watered-down Disney flick! The savagery of nature is on full display, and this can be unsettling for viewers of all ages, more so since the victims are often cuddly animals some keep as pets. There are scenes with roadkill, and rabbits being plucked from the sky by hawks while others are throttled in a noose-like snare while coughing up blood, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg."

Money quote: "Today, one can clearly see the effects of specialisation. Considered little more than a frivolous pastime in the 21st century, at best an elective, philosophy is seen by many to be ill suited to the vocation-oriented education system that is prioritised today. Universities provide courses that make students ‘job-ready’, while digital literacy is marketed as the benchmark of intellect and success. The infrastructure of education is almost unanimously in favour of quantified learning and STEM courses. In 2022, for instance, the Australian Research Council released its results for approved projects for 2023. Out of the 478 projects that were approved for 2023, 131 were for engineering, information and computing sciences; 117 for biological sciences and biotechnology; 98 for mathematics, physics, chemistry and Earth sciences; 93 for social, behavioural and economic sciences; and 39 for humanities and creative arts."

Money quote: "The Guardian Opinion headline, "Why are young people all growing mullets? I’ve been inspired by a much better hairstyle," joins a noxious trend of using a universal quantifier -- "all" or "every," for example -- to refer to a subset that is actually a minority.
It's sloppy and unprofessional. And it's a lie. The percentage of "young people" "growing mullets" is in fact a minority. The trend may or may not be growing. But even "most" is a lie. "All" is a ridiculous and obvious lie. Pointing this out pegs me as a stuffy scold. After all, the piece is frivolous, the topic irrelevant.
But I fear the motivation for such flabby language is that in today's media landscape, professional media competes with social media in the global contest for eyeballs."

Money quote: "Just as the American comic industry has contributed to the knowledge of European mythological pantheons such as the Norse or the Greek ones, this study analyzes the presence of the prehispanic pantheon in graphic narrative through the myth of Quetzalcoatl. After a review of multiple perspectives about its identity, and the definition of analysis and selection criteria, a revision of the presence of this deity in various comics is carried out. Our reading proposal is articulated to contribute to the knowledge of an essential mythological figure through comics as a teaching resource at different educational levels."
