Le stesse trasmissioni televisive informano sull'avanzamento del "fronte della fioritura", da sud ovest a nord est, in base alle previsioni di fioritura (sakura no kaikayosō) che dal 1951 fornisce l'Agenzia meteorologica giapponese. Sì, perché in un arcipelago che si estende per tremila chilometri i fiori sbocciano in momenti diversi, a seconda della latitudine, della varietà botanica, dell'andamento climatico. Il giorno di apertura (kaikabi) è definito quando almeno cinque o sei fiori si sono aperti su selezionati alberi campione (hyōhonboku), mentre la piena fioritura (mankaibi) è decretata quando sboccia l'80% dei fiori. A sud, per esempio, la fioritura avviene sin da metà marzo (ma a Okinawa già a gennaio), mentre all'estremo opposto, a Hokkaido, occorre attendere la fine di aprile."
