While reading the autobiography of my Yankee great-great-grandfather William James Stillman, I came across a bizarre and unexpected story.

Following a speech made to an American audience appealling for aid to liberate Hungary from the grip of the Habsburgs, my ancestor agreed to work for Lajos Kossuth.

He was sent on a mission to rescue the crown of St Stephen (which is necessary to crown a Hungarian monarch), but ultimately failed due to the Austrian police state being too much of a challenge to overcome.

Travelling around Eastern Europe really makes you appreciate British engineering.

Whereas public transport here generally operates at slower than 20mph between major cities, Brunel's Great Western Railway connected London to Bristol at 78mph in 1850.
