WHERE IS THE TEACHING OF THE I AM FOUND IN EASTERN RELIGIONS?

In the East, the corollary to the I AM THAT I AM is the OM, which is spelled OM or AUM. The object of religion and of devotion in the East is to go within, to go into samadhi, to go into nirvana. And the going within to the source of energy is reflected in the way of life. For instance, in India, where religion is of major import, the outer conditions of many reflect poverty, but the people have a rich inner life.

In the West the goal of contact with God is to go within and draw forth the inner flame for the mastery of the matter plane. And we find that mastery being expressed in our environment.

One of the mantras used in the East to go within is the OM. In the West, God has given us the word OM as I AM THAT I AM. When it is repeated as a mantra, “I AM THAT I AM, I AM THAT I AM…,” it has the effect of drawing forth energy to meet every challenge of our life.

The most fundamental requirement for peaceful coexistence is that we respect each other, recognizing every individual as a unique “expression” of being human. In this context, one could also speak of a profound “interest in the other person.” Essentially, it is about perceiving the essence of humanity in others, a kind of archetypal image of what it means to be human.
When we are able to perceive this in one another, much is gained. At the same time, tremendous healing is associated with it. Nothing less than the most essential prerequisite for peaceful coexistence. The concept of mindfulness is currently highly valued. It forms the basis for experiencing humanity as a “family,” a divinely given unity in diversity.
I can promise you: practicing this makes sense, perhaps more than anything else.
And now comes the fundamental insight: In every other person, just as in myself, there is something like a divine core. This realization alone is the foundation and goal of interpersonal peace. Once we have embraced this perspective, almost everything changes. Pentecost, as described in the New Testament narrative, serves as an example: It tells the story of people coming together for a festive occasion, many from all corners of the world. They come from diverse backgrounds and speak different languages, and miraculously, they understand each other. One could say they encounter each other in the “language of the heart.” This language is universal.
A beautiful, comforting story? No! This is music for the future! If we resolutely work towards it, the impossible will become possible. Pentecost is a vision! An empowering vision that shows us a viable path towards global peace. Visions are the elixir of life itself. Each vision contains untapped forces that inspire us to keep going and not rest.
