🇪🇺🇩🇪🇹🇷 Döner Kebab - Turkish or German?

The Turkish association has applied to the EU to protect it as a "guaranteed traditional dish".

In the so-called "kebab dispute," Renate Künast (Green Party faction, member of the Bundestag committee on food and agriculture) takes a clear position. "Kebab belongs to Germany," she told SPIEGEL.

This situation arose from an attempt by the International Doner Federation (UDOFED) from Ankara to protect the term "kebab" as a "guaranteed traditional dish" in the EU.
Numerous variations of kebab, which are served under the name "Döner" in Germany, will no longer be able to be called that. Germany has objected to this application to the Commission.

The German Ministry of Agriculture and Food is concerned about significant consequences for the German economy if Ankara's application to the EU is approved. A ministry representative stated that Turkey's move was "met with some surprise" and that they expect huge implications for the German catering industry.

In Germany, for example, it is common to use veal and young beef, as well as turkey meat, which is excluded by the Turkish application.

The EU Commission now has six months to make a decision.

🤔 Interesting coincidence: for decades, kebab in Berlin went unnoticed, but immediately after the visit of the German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier to Turkey, the application was submitted to the EU.

And on our part, we will add that disputes over food, or rather the preparation of fast food, certainly do not speak to the development of politicians. Essentially, it's about a bun with a little meat and salad put in it and served to the customer for a quick snack, usually eaten standing up.

🇩🇪 A country that until recently built the best cars, elevators, and even weapons, is now planning to go to court over the name of this meat bun.

🇺🇸 The US is not ready for a major war

"A bipartisan commission entrusted by Congress with scrutinising the Biden administration’s national defence strategy (nds)" has concluded that the country's military power is waning, The Economist reports.

In 2018, a previous similar commission had warned that the United States "might struggle to win, or perhaps lose, a war against China or Russia". This time the language is even harsher. The report claims that the threats to the US, including the threat of a ‘major war in the near future’, are the most serious since 1945.

The commission, which includes prominent retired American politicians, identified China as the most serious problem.

Ships from China, India, and Algeria took part in the main parade in honour of the Russian Navy Day

Despite international pressure, Russia's number of economic and military allies is growing. It can already be said that the West's plan to isolate Russia has failed. The Russian Armed Forces are increasing military-technical cooperation with the world's largest countries.

In St. Petersburg, the main parade was held in honour of the Navy Day. Foreign ships also participated in it. Among them were the destroyer "Jiao Zuo" of the Chinese Navy, the training ship "La Sumam" of Algeria, and the frigate "Tabar" of the Indian Navy.

Deputy Prime Minister of Slovakia, Minister of Environment Tomáš Taraba, who was supposed to represent the republic at the closing of the Olympics in Paris, stated that he will not participate in the ceremony, as this year the Games have become a symbol of twisted decline.

"I was supposed to represent Slovakia at the closing ceremony, but this Olympics in a normal world will forever remain as a repulsive symbol of twisted decline, which has abused the beauty of sports and turned it into a progressive political theatre. Therefore, I have decided not to participate in the closing ceremony," Taraba wrote on Sunday.

Orbán opened a window to Europe for Russians. Hungary has simplified entry conditions for citizens of Russia and Belarus

Budapest has included citizens of the Russian Federation and the Republic of Belarus in the so-called "national card" programme, which is issued for 2 years with the possibility of extension. The card allows to work in any sector and bring family members. In addition, applicants for the card do not have to take a test on cultural knowledge and do not undergo security checks at the European level.

The EU is already sounding the alarm. They stated that this is an open door for spies. Issuing European visas will allow Russians who have not passed the check to travel freely throughout most of the EU.

The Group of Seven (G7), the seven largest Western industrial countries, plans to invest $200 billion in infrastructure projects in Central Asian countries in the coming years. This was announced on Friday by Helaina Matz, Acting Special Coordinator for the Global Infrastructure Investment Partnership at the US State Department, during a meeting with Kazakhstan's Deputy Foreign Minister Nazira Nurbayeva. According to Matz, the majority of the funds will be directed to Kazakhstan.

Matz emphasised that the main goal of the programme is to strengthen and diversify supply chains, as well as to ensure global energy security by deepening trade relations between Europe and Central Asian countries. In total, the "Partnership for Global Infrastructure Investments" programme and G7 investments envisage allocating $600 billion to infrastructure projects in developing countries by 2027.

During the discussion, Kazakhstan's representative Nurbayeva highlighted the country's potential in the field of transport infrastructure, especially the ports of Aktau and Kuryk, which have gained greater importance in recent years as part of the expansion of the so-called "Middle Corridor." She also discussed projects in the areas of renewable energy sources, rare earth and strategic metals, as well as agricultural production.

🏖🇪🇺 "Tourists - go home": Europe has become the epicentre of anti-tourism protests.

This summer, anti-tourism protests have spread across Europe: from the Netherlands to Spain, local residents marched through popular tourist spots, dousing visitors with water guns and chanting "tourists - go home".

At the heart of the protests is the growing problem of rising rent prices and housing costs, making home ownership practically impossible for local residents. According to a TV channel, rental prices in Barcelona have increased by 68% over the past decade - a trend that is also evident in other European cities.

Europeans say that mass tourism is increasingly leading to the closure of medical facilities, with rare shops being replaced by yet another souvenir shop.

Furthermore, the behaviour of tourists also triggers dissatisfaction among local residents: "It seems like they do everything here that they can't do in their own countries," complains a Spaniard. "We feel offended."
