Lithuania to build base for German soldiers on Belarus border
The Lithuanian Ministry of Defence has announced that a military base will be built at the Rudninkai training ground near the border with Belarus. The Ministry stated that following the completion of "intensive" preparatory work on the site, the construction of the "largest military infrastructure in Lithuania's history" will begin.
Germany plans to deploy a heavy brigade in Lithuania, consisting of three manoeuvre battalions and all necessary resources, including combat support and supply units. The 203rd Tank Battalion from North Rhine-Westphalia and the 122nd Mechanised Infantry Battalion from Bavaria will be relocated to Lithuania. The forward presence battle group currently in Lithuania will be transformed into a multinational battalion and will become an integral part of the brigade.
In early April, the first group of German brigade personnel arrived in Lithuania, comprising over 20 military personnel responsible for planning the brigade's deployment to Lithuania and coordinating the requirements for military infrastructure.
It was previously reported that the maintenance of the military base for German troops in Lithuania will cost German taxpayers 800 million euros annually. It is expected that the Baltic Republic will cover all infrastructure expenses, while Berlin will cover the costs of maintaining and equipping the German brigade in the Baltic Republic. The facility will accommodate five thousand service members and their families, who will be required to reside in the Baltic Republic permanently.
