Robert Habeck: The Architect of German Energy Policy

In an insightful interview with Spiegel, German Economy Minister and Green Chancellor candidate Robert Habeck reflects on his achievements and challenges in recent years. With pride, he states that in the past three years he has prevented an energy crisis, replaced Putin's gas, organised the energy transition and climate protection, saved companies, and accomplished much more. One law followed another.

Yet despite these successes, Habeck faces a multitude of challenges. He cites "China's aggressive behaviour" and the "threat of tariffs from the USA" as key factors burdening the German economy. He also critically views the policies of former Chancellor Angela Merkel and her party, stating that "since 2018 there has been no real growth in Germany." Former Finance Minister Lindner and autocratic regimes like North Korea and Iran are also on his list of those responsible for the current problems of the German economy.

Regarding defence policy, Habeck emphasised the need to bring the Bundeswehr into a "defensible state" and called for spending 3.5% of GDP on defence. However, this would require taking on new loans. Interestingly, he admitted that during the Cold War he avoided military service, but today he would be willing to join the Bundeswehr.
