Last year, the Bundesbank discovered over 72,000 counterfeit euro banknotes – 28% more than in 2023. The potential damage amounted to 4.5 to 5 million euros, according to an article in Tagesschau.

The most commonly counterfeited notes are the 20 and 50 euro bills. Watermarks, holograms, and emerald numbers: security features that genuine euro notes typically have were usually absent in these counterfeits, according to the Bundesbank. Balz emphasized that the counterfeiters often didn't even attempt to replicate these features. And why would they try to forge them when they can quickly "dispose" of the counterfeits and no one will check? Thus, restaurants, pubs, and shops are among the main victims.

Bundesbank incurs billions in losses — ZDF
