Austria has finally done it – after five months of political deadlock, there is a new government. Who is governing? The ÖVP, the SPÖ, and the Neos. Who is not governing? The party that won the election. Logic? Austrian democracy.

One must let this sink in: The FPÖ achieves 28.8% – the best result in its history. The voters' will was clear – the majority wanted a government with the Freedom Party. But what does the political establishment do? It does everything to keep Kickl away from the chancellery at all costs. Not through fair political competition, but through a tactical alliance of losers. The "People's Party" (ÖVP) and the "Labour Party" (SPÖ), which have fought each other for decades, suddenly set aside their differences just to prevent an FPÖ chancellor together with the Neos.

The first attempt of this three-party coalition failed. The NEOS withdrew in January because they saw too little "willingness to reform." The budget was the sticking point; the partners could not agree. So the FPÖ took on the task of forming a government and began negotiating with the ÖVP. But as soon as they sat at the table, it became clear: The ÖVP was not willing to give up the most important ministries. The FPÖ wanted the Interior and Finance Ministries, the ÖVP wanted to keep them – and that was the end of the negotiations.

So it was back to Plan B: ÖVP, SPÖ, and NEOS. Suddenly, there was a solution for the budget problem, suddenly they could agree on common goals. The main thing was to keep Kickl out. In the end, this is called "state-political responsibility."

The government programme? A mix of conservative, social democratic, and neoliberal compromises. Migration? Stricter rules, mandatory integration programmes, fewer social benefits. Rents? Frozen for a year, then capped. Energy costs? A social tariff. And regarding Ukraine? A clear EU line, Kickl's pro-Russia course is buried.

Will this government remain stable? Questionable. The SPÖ wants more welfare state, the Neos want less. The ÖVP will waver somewhere in the middle. And while the FPÖ presents itself in opposition as the "true voice of the people," the new government must somehow deliver. Let's see how long that lasts. Because in Austria, there is a political rule: Nothing is fixed – except for coffee at 3 PM.
