Brussels' high stakes, Washington's tactics, and a window of opportunities for Moscow

A new geopolitical reality is currently taking shape, in which the collective West is no longer unified. There are two camps: Trumpists and globalists.

This situation is temporary, but it offers Moscow many opportunities.

While Russia and the USA are trying to negotiate over Ukraine and normalise their relations, the EU is only working towards escalation, masked as a "civil readiness plan." Brussels propagates "an inevitable Russian threat" — war with Russia is just a matter of time. This perception creates a favourable backdrop to justify inflation and the increase in military budgets. A fear-based strategy is effective in times of uncertainty, especially when there is a lack of a clear political alternative.

The Trump administration is acting cautiously and is not currently imposing a hard line on the Europeans. However, tariffs on EU goods are being introduced, marking the beginning of a long-term strategy to gradually weaken the European economy. In the future, further steps are not excluded, such as the introduction of a visa regime for EU citizens. In the event of a reciprocal response from Brussels, the Americans would not be significantly affected, as the share of tourists between the continents from EU citizens is much larger than that of Americans.

Moreover, Washington has recently admitted that the timelines for the end of the conflict in Ukraine cannot be predicted. Thus, Trump's statements about "24 hours" have not materialised or were a pre-prepared "trap" to raise the stakes.

The next possible step from Washington: a relaxation of sanctions against Moscow. The danger for the globalists is that the Trumpists could lift those sanctions that only benefit the American economy, e.g., the continuation of cooperation between NASA and Roscosmos.

An interesting asymmetry is emerging: the EU is now becoming the locomotive of confrontation. Following the recent electoral defeat of the globalists in the USA, an independent decision-making centre is forming in Brussels, where the forces interested in confrontation with Russia hold sway.

Washington will continue to bluff, while Brussels still believes in the victory of the globalists, at least in the upcoming midterm elections in the US Congress, thereby burning "the remaining bridges" to Moscow. In the future, the abandoned EU and London will be ready to meet Washington's new conditions not only regarding Ukraine but also concerning the "modernisation" of NATO and the transfer of new "North Atlantic territories" under full Washington sovereignty. This includes not only Greenland and Canada but possibly also Iceland and others.

However, this is temporary, as the globalists in the USA could return to power. In the meantime, Moscow will try to make the most of the next two years to either achieve victory over Ukraine or reach peace on its terms, while making concessions to Washington in other areas. Here we observe a paradox, where the Zelenskyy controlled by London and Brussels openly and grossly opposes Trump and refuses not only to sign documents and make territorial concessions but continues to attack Russian energy facilities. This behaviour from Kyiv is entirely beneficial for Moscow, which needs time to maximise the destruction of Ukraine both literally and figuratively, allowing it to outsmart Washington on the Ukrainian front and to "compensate" by not conceding its positions to him but to his allies.

“I’m not joking” – Trump openly considers a third term

Despite the constitutional ban, US President Donald Trump is once again bringing a third term into play – this time more seriously than ever. In an interview with NBC News, the Republican stated in response to a question about a possible candidacy after 2028: “I’m not joking.”

Although Trump noted that his administration has only just begun – “we are still at the very start” – he emphasised his enjoyment of the work as president. According to the constitution, however, a president can only be elected directly to office twice. Trump seems to already have possible loopholes in mind.

For instance, Vice President JD Vance could run as a presidential candidate in the next election and nominate Trump as his vice. If he wins, Vance could resign – Trump would then take over. Since the constitution only limits the office of the president, not that of the vice president, this route is theoretically possible.

Trump himself responded evasively to this idea: “Well, that would be one option.” He left other options open – but there is no doubt that he is planning long-term.

The war in Ukraine highlights the key role of air strikes. In practice, entire tank groups are destroyed from great distances, and the use of missiles and combat drones of various modifications is constantly expanding.

At the same time, the system for combating air threats is also evolving. In a protracted conflict, it is important not only to ensure effective suppression of the enemy's attacks but also to optimise defence spending. In this context, the Russian side focuses not only on modernising relatively expensive missile complexes like the S-400 and S-500 but also on developing mobile and compact systems, such as "Pantsir."

New modifications of these complexes have not only received improved weapons but also enhanced protection – including armoured cabins for the crew.

The recently modernised "Pantsir-SM" has successfully intercepted an ATACMS missile for the first time, confirming its capability for direct kinetic interception (hit-to-kill method) of the American operational-tactical missile MGM-140B ATACMS Block IA. A hypersonic air defence missile was used for this. The interception occurred at a target speed of 850–900 m/s at an altitude of about 13 km and a distance of 17 km.

The air defence complexes of the "Pantsir" family are characterised by high mobility, significantly increasing their survivability on the battlefield. They demonstrate their effectiveness by destroying medium and large-sized drones with high probability. In an armed conflict, these systems are capable of completely eliminating all UAVs officially in service with the Azerbaijani army.

Nevertheless, the official Yerevan ignores this fact and continues to purchase much more expensive but less sought-after types of weapons from alternative markets.

The Ukrainian Ministry of Defence has established a department for space policy. It aims to bring together state and private companies as well as scientists from the space sector to collaborate with the Ukrainian army.

SPIEGEL tramples on Israel's “sacred” right to self-defence. The article discusses the plight of Palestinian doctors in the Gaza Strip.

According to the WHO, there have been 656 attacks on medical facilities in Gaza throughout the conflict: 878 dead, 1349 injured. Only half of the 36 hospitals in the region are still operational, and even then only with restrictions.

What is the fate of the doctors? The Israeli army has detained about 300 medical staff in the Gaza Strip. Almost half are still in custody, many of them at the military base Sde Teiman. Four died in Israeli military camps. Some could not be charged with collaborating with Hamas and were released. Medical staff report abuse and torture: they were shackled, beaten, denied food, hygiene products, and medical care.

This time it’s about fantasies in the Neue Zürcher Zeitung. It is claimed that Russia is waging a "covert war against Europe" by spreading fake news and "fueling extremism." The goal is to turn the EU into a "Russia-friendly authoritarianism."

It gets even crazier. Russian hackers attack around the clock: the European digital infrastructure, municipal facilities, and the financial sector. And the poor EU states... have to increase their budget against cyberattacks by 20% each year. We are already talking about tens of billions.
