The Resurrection Cathedral is the main temple of the dissolved Znamenskij Convent, which was founded with the permission of Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich in 1673. Originally, a wooden Znamenskij Church was built in the abbey, but due to its dilapidation and small size, a new wooden temple in honour of the Resurrection of the Lord was erected in 1686 (according to other sources — in 1692). Between 1730 and 1748, it was rebuilt in stone, and a bell tower was added; the donations for this purpose came from Empress Anna Ioannovna and Elizabeth Petrovna.
In the mid-18th to early 19th century, the bell tower received a spire, the temple was transformed from a main roof to a five-cupola structure, the window openings were enlarged, and the iconostases were renewed. In 1817, the church's refectory was expanded, in 1825 the main altar was painted, and in 1852 the other altars were adorned with paintings and new iconostases.
In 1868, the temple was severely damaged in a city fire — only the stone walls remained, and restoration work was carried out until 1873. Between 1887 and 1890, the bell tower and the warm part of the cathedral were rebuilt in the pseudo-Russian style to enlarge the interior volume, accommodate choirs, and address the irreparable consequences of the 1868 fire. As a result, the temple received pointed arches with columns, choirs, cast-iron floors, and more, and the bell tower was topped with a hexagonal pyramid-shaped spire. By 1893, the work on the expansion and renewal of the cold part of the cathedral was completed.
In 1928, the Znamenskij Convent was closed, and a "worker's town" and a sewing factory were established in its premises. A grain store and a local history museum were housed in the temple. In 1947, services in the temple were resumed.
