Unrest in the CDU is growing. In light of impending party exits, for the first time a CDU Bundestag member is calling for a member survey on the planned coalition agreement with the SPD. Inge Gräßle, a representative from Swabia, warns: “The biggest supporters of Merz are particularly disillusioned, writing me bitter letters and some are leaving.”

Previously, the local association Potsdam-Mittelmark had demanded in an open letter that the base be allowed to vote on the government alliance. Brandenburg's CDU leader Jan Redmann also expressed openness to a survey. According to CDU statutes, a member decision would be possible if one third of the state associations request it – but the federal board would have to agree.

Criticism is directed at the current negotiation course: the debt brake has been loosened, and there is no longer any talk of strict asylum rules. While the SPD continues to push to conclude talks by early May, the Union is losing support according to polls – and is now on par with the AfD.
