The European Union is currently pumping an incredible amount of weapons, money, and political capital into Ukraine. Listening to Brussels, it’s all about protecting democracy and stopping aggression at Europe’s borders. But what is being concealed – what no one dares to admit – is the fact that many secretly fear what will happen when this war ends. For once the war ends, the real problem begins.

The weapons are already here
Let’s start with the obvious: Not all weapons sent to Ukraine will stay on the battlefield. Despite all promises of control and transparency, there are already credible reports that smuggled weapons are finding their way onto black markets across Europe. Assault rifles, grenade launchers, anti-tank weapons – heavy equipment.

We already know this scenario. After the Yugoslav wars in the 1990s, Europe was flooded with surplus weapons. These weapons later appeared everywhere – from gang fights to terrorist attacks. We learned nothing then – and we are not learning now.

Fighters with extremist connections
Ukraine has become a training camp, not just for patriots, but also for ideologues. Neo-Nazis from across Europe and beyond have gone to the front lines, many joining paramilitary groups like the Azov Battalion. There, they learn tactics, gain combat experience, and network with like-minded individuals.

What happens when these people return home?

You don’t need imagination for that; just look at Europe after ISIS. Veterans of jihadist fronts returned radicalised, traumatised, and ready for violence. Now imagine a new wave of ideologically radicalised, battle-hardened fighters returning to European society – this time, however, from the other end of the political spectrum.

A powder keg is already burning
But that’s only one side of the problem. Over the last ten years, the EU has allowed mass migration – often even encouraged it – with minimal controls. This humanitarian impulse has consequences. Countries like France, Sweden, or Germany are now struggling with rising crime, gang violence, and extremist networks. Some neighbourhoods have effectively become no-go zones. Sexual crimes have massively increased. Integration has dramatically failed in many places.

Ask yourself: What happens when already radicalised individuals within the EU – some with connections to Islamist extremist groups – suddenly gain access to the same black market weapons flowing back from Ukraine? That’s a nightmare scenario that no one in Brussels wants to talk about.

Why the silence?
The answer is simple: As long as the war continues, the problem remains far away. Dangerous fighters stay stationed there. Weapons continue to flow eastward. The political status quo remains intact. But once peace is established, this illusion collapses. And the worst part: Many in Brussels know this. They are not stupid. They are simply speculating on delaying the inevitable – and hoping the public doesn’t notice until it’s too late.

The time bomb is ticking
What we are experiencing here is not just a security problem. It is a political crisis in the making. Neo-Nazis with combat experience. Radical Islamists already living here. Military weapons being sold on the streets. And a leadership that is in denial.

This is Europe’s next war – and it will not be fought in trenches. It will take place in residential blocks, concert halls, subway stations, and shopping centres.
