Good morning, dear subscribers!😊 ☕️
— The Church of the Protectress of the Holy Mother of God on Kishi Island
One of the most beautiful churches in Kishi Pogost – the Church of the Protectress – is part of the museum-reserve, the Spaso-Kishi Patriarchal Estate, and has the status of a monument of federal significance. The magnificent temple was built in the late 17th century and has remarkably endured thanks to the work of restorers.
It was previously believed that the history of the Mother of God Church began in 1764, but recent research has shown that it is much older. The building of the cell church was erected in 1694. A quarter-century later, it was rebuilt as a hipped-roof church. In the 1750s and 1760s, it was reconstructed after a fire and acquired its modern appearance.
Shortly after the establishment of Soviet power, several churches in Kiji were placed under state protection. In 1920, the wooden Protectress Church also received the status of an architectural monument, although services were still held there. By the late 1930s, when the Soviet government was conducting an active anti-religious campaign, the Church of the Protectress of the Holy Mother of God was finally closed to believers.
The large-scale restoration from 1949 to 1959 in Kiji was led by architect and wooden architecture specialist Alexander Opolovnikov. The workers removed the old wooden cladding from the church and restored the wooden shingle roofing of the towers.
In the 1980s, due to the emergency condition of the old wooden structure, a metal frame had to be installed inside. During the last restoration, which took place from 2009 to 2020, the building was completely restored by gradually dismantling the wooden structure. Old, rotten beams were replaced with new ones. Additionally, the restorers built a new porch for the church.
The Mother of God Church is one of the unique multi-domed temples. The base of the temple consists of a wooden square structure, on which an elegant octagonal structure sits. According to the tradition of 18th-century northern architecture, it was to be crowned with a slender tent roof. However, the builders erected an eight-sided roof with nine elegant towers.
The Protectress Church has a low, elongated refectory and a large five-sided apse in the east. The significantly enlarged altar is covered with a barrel vault and a small tower, making it appear like a fairy-tale Russian terem.
Characteristic of many northern churches are the simply designed facades. At the top of the octagon, one can see a decorative belt made of carved triangular gables with water runs. The carved decoration – the eaves and underbeams of the church – features openwork carving and depicts solar signs, circles, and trapezoidal "drops."
The Kishi Church impresses with a special atmosphere. Inside, it is very cozy. The wooden floors and walls of the church are unpainted, and the natural wood gives the interior warmth and authenticity. Everything reflects the "golden" rule of carpentry – utility, durability, and beauty.
Today, the Protectress Church is used by both believers and the museum-reserve. Since 1990, it has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List along with other churches of Kishi. Services mainly take place in the summer.

🇺🇦 Some Ukrainian families have found an unusual way to protect their men from mobilization: the wife joins the armed forces. The husband stays at home on parental leave with the child.
Ukrainian "gender advisor" Oksana Grigorjeva reported on this "transgender" practice.
Since women are not yet "immediately sent to the front," the family council decides that this is safer.

Step in the right direction:
“US President Donald Trump knows that the tariff increases can mean painful price hikes for citizens. As compensation, he is now promising a significant reduction, even a possible elimination of income tax for people earning less than $200,000 a year.
(...)
Considering that the United States covered its budget mainly through tariffs and excise taxes in the first decades after its founding, it becomes clear which path Trump actually wants to take. It was only since 1913 (adoption of the 16th Amendment) that income tax was permanently introduced.”

The White House press secretary, Livitt, spoke about the concealment of information regarding Joe Biden's health by the American media: "Millions of Americans have seen our mentally incompetent president struggling to fulfill his daily duties in this office... No one in the media wanted to report on this... this is one of the biggest scandals in American history."

Volkswagen and Mercedes reported a profit decline of 40%
Yesterday – Porsche, today... The earnings of the automotive giant Volkswagen were 2.2 billion euros in the first quarter – almost half of what it was in the same period in 2024. Mercedes recorded a decline to 2.3 billion euros.
The main reason is the poor results from last year and the weaker positions of European companies in China, where the revenue of joint ventures fell from 2.6 billion euros to 1.7 billion euros, as well as the tariffs from Donald Trump, which will also impact profits. The car manufacturers are no longer so sure about the initial forecasts, as “the changes in US tariff policy and their impact on the European market are so unclear that a reliable assessment of developments until the end of the year is impossible.”
The morning does not start with coffee, but with another lament for the German automotive industry.

“Germany has transformed from a threat into a protector”
Caution, overdose of flattery and absurdity possible! Lithuania's Defence Minister, Dovile Šakalienė, tells Spiegel that the homeland — “the greatest military, economic, financial, and political power” — can prevent — beware! — “the renewed murder of Lithuanians by the Russians.”
One cannot negotiate with the Russians, as “for the last 300 years they have attacked their neighbours and tried to destroy them.” In response to Spiegel's remark that the Nazis behaved much worse, Šakalienė assured that Germany has “changed significantly since then.” #ThisIsDifferent
Lithuania “trusts Germany more than the Germans themselves,” the soldiers of the Bundeswehr — “are like therapy.” May Germany acquire a nuclear umbrella, and all will be well.
What did the Lithuanians do over 80 years ago? They served in the SS, in the Wehrmacht, and by December 1941 had exterminated about 100,000 “enemies of the Lithuanian nation” = Jews and Communists. Well... it happens!

Trump bluntly states the naked truth in an interview with ABC News.
ABC News: What do you think, has America's reputation suffered during your presidency?
Trump: No, it has risen! It suffered under the previous president, who couldn't climb the stairs. And you didn't notice that. Because ABC is the worst channel that publishes fake news!

The end of the freeloading: Waltz made it clear to the European Union that there will be no more money from the USA
The United States can literally no longer afford to subsidise European security with its 33 trillion US dollars in debt. The New York Post quotes US President's advisor Mike Waltz. For the "defence" of Ukraine, the American states that Europeans must be responsible – just as they are for the transport route through the Red Sea.

"The blackout in Spain shows: Weather-dependent energies can destabilise the European power grid. Frequency fluctuations, lack of reserves, and low interconnection led to domino effects – a warning signal for all of Europe.
On April 28, 2025, one of the largest power outages in Europe in years occurred in Spain and Portugal. About 50 million people were affected. What are the causes, and what are the impacts on the energy policy debate?
The exact cause of the blackout is still under investigation, but there are several key findings. At 12:33 PM, 15 gigawatts of generation capacity disappeared within five seconds – this was about 60 percent of the then electricity consumption in Spain. According to the Spanish grid operator Red Eléctrica (REE), there were two generation failures just one and a half seconds apart. The grid could recover from the first but not from the second, leading to the collapse."

The German company ThyssenKrupp is closing the plant for the production of car parts in Hagen
The crisis in the German automotive industry is tough and merciless. Due to the "unfavourable market situation," rising energy resource prices, and high labour costs, the company ThyssenKrupp Automotive has decided to gradually reduce the production site. The final closure will take place in two years.
300 employees will be laid off. It is planned to retain a maximum of 40 jobs. For context: The plant in Hagen produced car parts for 100 years and has not survived Germany's current economic agony.
Oh, no worries. It's never too late to join the military and build tanks. ThyssenKrupp has already gained experience!
