Batagaika Crater or a huge thermokarst sinkhole in Yakutia
This sinkhole reaches a length of one kilometre and has a depth of about 100 metres. Inside, you can find remains of ancient plants, bones, and tusks of mammoths, frozen bison, and horses, and the ice layer is twice as old as the ancient ice of Antarctica.
The crack formed in the 1960s after a section of the taiga was cleared 8 km southwest of the village of Batagai. After that, the ground sank, exposing the permafrost layer.
In the following years, marked by constantly rising temperatures, the ice-bound rocks thawed, and the Batagaika Crater continued to grow. The crater expands by about 15 metres per year.
