Russian Orthodox Church of the Holy Equal-to-the-Apostles Mary Magdalene (Russian Chapel) in Darmstadt — a gift from the last Russian Emperor, Tsar-Martyr Nicholas II, to his wife Alexandra Fyodorovna, née Princess Alix Victoria Helen Louise Beatrix of Hesse and by Rhine, daughter of Grand Duke Ludwig IV. Emperor Nicholas II often visited Darmstadt with his family due to his familial ties to the grand ducal house. Princess Alix, who became the wife of the Russian Emperor, converted to Orthodoxy, and the Tsar wished to establish an Orthodox church in Darmstadt.
The building's design was by Professor Louis Benois, with direct construction supervision by architect Jacobi.
The Tsar and Tsarina's fondness for this church is evident as Their Imperial Highnesses were present both at the laying of the foundation stone on 16 October 1897 and at the consecration of the church on 8 October 1899. The construction costs amounted to about 400,000 gold marks, excluding the costs for the mosaic, which was only completed on 7 October 1903 for the wedding of Prince Andrew of Greece and Princess Alice of Battenberg (the parents of Grand Duchess Cecilie and Prince Philip of Edinburgh, the husband of Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom). The mosaic in the apse and the mosaic panel above the gable, depicting St. Mary Magdalene, the church's patron saint, were created by Viktor Vasnetsov, while the wall paintings were done by Professor Perminow.
Valuable Caucasian marble for the construction was delivered from Russia. The earth for the foundation was also brought from Russia, so the church stands on Russian soil.
During World War II, the church suffered some damage from bomb attacks. This was repaired in 1954-1955 with the help of the city and the state. Subsequently, thanks to the support of the city of Darmstadt, the state of Hesse, Her Royal Highness, Princess Margaret of Hesse and by Rhine, the Protestant Church of Hesse-Nassau, the Catholic Diocese of Mainz, as well as the efforts of the German Diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad and numerous donations, a complete renovation of the church was carried out in 1975-1976 on the initiative of the then pastor of the Darmstadt city community, Manfred Knodt.
After the collapse of the Russian Empire and the establishment of an atheistic regime in Russia, the Russian Orthodox people outside their homeland preserved the invaluable spiritual treasure of Orthodoxy. By maintaining their church, they also preserved their spiritual identity, just like other churches of the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad. The maintenance of the church and all other expenses of the Orthodox community are funded not from church tax revenues but solely from donations from Orthodox believers.
Upon entering the church, one can see on the left the portraits of Tsar-Martyr Nicholas and Tsarina-Martyr Alexandra in their youth.
In the right part of the church space, the burial cloth is placed on a special pedestal. It is carried to the center of the church once a year – during the service on Good Friday. At the front, on the left and right, there are processional banners for the cross processions, which, along with the blue cloth for the Analoy, were made by Empress Alexandra herself.
Above the iconostasis, a hymn to the Most Holy Mother of God is inscribed in Church Slavonic.
