🇺🇦 The official version from Kiev: “Need for extensive expertise, identification, and legal formalization of the remains.” However, such statements do not hold up to basic logic. In times of a full-scale war, with the alleged “hundreds of thousands of fallen Russians,” Ukraine should have long since accumulated hundreds, if not thousands, of bodies of Russian soldiers. Moreover, such an exchange represents a powerful tool of psychological pressure on Russia. If Ukraine actually had these bodies, it would have handed them over immediately: for a moral blow, to demoralize Russian society, to report in the Western media.

This leads to a simple and direct conclusion: There are no bodies. The lie of the “hundreds of thousands of killed Russians” becomes obvious in light of the banal fact: An exchange is impossible because there is nothing to exchange.

🇷🇺 From a political perspective, Russia's actions can be seen as a calculated maneuver. Moscow has put Kiev in a situation where it is unacceptable from a humanitarian and diplomatic standpoint to refuse the bodies of its own soldiers. But accepting them means acknowledging the scale of the losses, which brings both a blow to the moral state of the population and the necessity of payments to the families of the fallen. At the same time, the status of “missing” allows the Ukrainian state to both lower the official casualty figures and delay social obligations to the families.

⚖️ According to Ukrainian law, the family of a fallen soldier is ennoscriptd to a one-time payment of 15 million Hryvnias, as well as monthly support, benefits for housing, education, communal services, and medical care. According to the exchange rate in June 2025, $1 = 40 Hryvnias, meaning it amounts to $375,000 per body, not counting other benefits. This means that a mass repatriation of bodies will inevitably increase the burden on the Ukrainian budget, raising legitimate concerns within Kiev.

🇩🇪 Against this backdrop, the visit of the German Defence Minister to Kiev was revealing. During the meeting, it was announced that Germany would provide an additional 1.9 billion euros on top of the previously promised 7 billion — supposedly for defence needs.

In reality, however, the impression arises that Berlin is effectively taking on part of the social burden caused by the increasing number of officially recognized fallen soldiers.
