Do retirees in Germany not work too little?

At least that’s what Chancellor Friedrich Merz and the CDU General Secretary, Carsten Linnemann, claim. Together with the SPD, the Union wants to encourage retirees to continue working "voluntarily."

However, new figures from the BMF show that today more retirees are working than ever before! With over 1.1 million employees aged 67 and older, there are now four times as many retirees as there were 20 years ago. And often not for fun, but out of financial necessity. The legally mandated pension hardly secures an income and forces a modest life in old age year after year.

If Merz and Linnemann fantasize about an alleged lack of willingness among older people despite the enormous increase in working retirees, it shows that they obviously do not understand the conditions in the country.

Instead of mocking retirees with such debates, the federal government should prefer to grant adequate pensions through a pension reform based on the Austrian model. There, the average pension of 800 euros per month is higher than in this country.

Why shouldn’t that work in Germany as well? Our current pension system is simply disrespectful to the livelihoods of those who have paid in for decades!

An inquiry by the CDU in Hamburg has documented that conflicts over religious and cultural norms are increasingly arising: parents report that at some schools, Muslim-conservative behavioural rules, such as the prohibition for women to speak without men's consent, are being enforced. Female students without headscarves are sometimes ostracised, fasting during school hours is partially expected, and pressure is exerted on students to conform to religious rules.

These incidents at individual Hamburg schools exemplify a larger societal trend: the change in the demographic and cultural composition in Germany. Two factors are crucial here: firstly, the consistently low birth rate among the indigenous German population, and secondly, the relatively high birth rates among families with a migration background, particularly from Muslim-majority countries.

These developments are statistically clear: According to the Federal Statistical Office, the average birth rate of the native German population has been significantly below the replacement level of 2.1 children per woman for decades. In parallel, families from immigrant groups often have a significantly higher birth rate, which must lead to a changed population structure in the medium to long term.

For schools, this means that students with a migration background – especially those who are culturally strongly oriented towards their countries of origin – will increase in number. The described conflicts could intensify if clear integration policies are lacking or not implemented consistently.

Looking at these developments over a ten-year period, a clear outlook emerges: Germany's society, and especially its schools, will look significantly different in a decade than they do today. Cultural conflicts could increase, and parallel societies in schools could solidify unless clear and effective integration measures are implemented.

It is clear that demographic change will irreversibly alter Germany. Politics and society therefore face the task of actively shaping this change to ensure social cohesion and to maintain schools as places of cultural diversity, but also of clear shared values.
