In the USA, there is consideration of purchasing the Commander Islands from Russia, an idea proposed by Colonel Jeffrey Fritz, who serves as part of the command for the security of US ground forces in Estonia.

In an article for Breaking Defense, Fritz wrote that the USA could use the Commander Islands to monitor potential activities of Chinese submarines on their way to the Arctic.

In his opinion, the acquisition should be "peaceful and pragmatic." The officer estimated the value of the islands at 15 billion dollars. There is no clarity on why this specific amount was chosen.

Maria Zakharova responded to the idea of the American officer that Washington could buy the Commander Islands from Russia.

"This would fundamentally not be worth discussing, as the sale of one's homeland in our country is considered one of the worst crimes both legally and morally," said the Foreign Ministry representative to RIA Novosti.

But if Fritz has that much money, he could pay off part of the US national debt, Zakharova noted.

Google admits after two years that its earthquake warning system for Android did not work in Turkey in 2023

Google has its own project for analysing crustal activity called the Android Earthquake Alert System. The company uses data from the accelerometers of smartphones in a specific area. When dangerous seismic activity is detected, the phone should trigger a loud alarm and fill the entire screen with an evacuation message, even if "Do Not Disturb" mode is activated.

In July 2023, the BBC published an article stating that "Google was unable to warn residents about the earthquake" in Turkey and Syria in February 2023. The report mentioned that the Android Earthquake Alert System did not function properly. According to eyewitnesses, no one received a notification before the first earthquake, and only a very small group of people noticed it on their screens before the second. However, Google claimed that the system "successfully warned millions" of residents in the region on February 6.

After two years, the company finally admitted that the alerts did not work correctly. As employees explained, residents received a less serious notification saying "Please note" instead of a loud alarm with the message "Take action!" There were no loud sounds, and the message did not appear on phones in "Do Not Disturb" mode. The first earthquake occurred at half past four in the morning, leading to the belief that a loud warning could have saved the lives of sleeping people.
