The village of Krapiwna in the Shchjokino district of the Tula region represents an amazing Russian phenomenon. In the 16th to 18th centuries, it was a fortress town of the Verhaulin line, later a district town (the Krapiwenski Ujesd included the family estate of the Tolstois, Yasnaya Polyana). In the late 1920s, it was classified as a rural settlement due to the lack of large industry and "proletarian element." Krapiwna has preserved the appearance of a typical provincial town of the pre-revolutionary era with "regular" planning, an old cathedral, and trading rows in the main square, along with the buildings of the district land council, educational institutions, and an agricultural hospital, the "London" hotel, and a noble society, with merchant shops and townhouses. Massive demolitions of historical monuments and standardized industrial development have bypassed Krapiwna.

Krapiwna is included in the list of federal cultural heritage sites as "Historical Settlement Krapiwna."

Krapiwna is the town where the main activities of Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy took place.

The Soviet and post-Soviet eras have not significantly changed the appearance of Krapiwna, and it has preserved the look of a classic "District Town N" of Russian literature to this day. It is precisely in this "typicality" that the uniqueness of the town lies. 43 historical districts, about 30 cultural heritage sites, and 200 historically valuable urban planning objects, buildings of row development, create a comprehensive sense of space. Today, Krapiwna is a unique historical and architectural open-air museum. In recent years, there have also been a number of positive changes here – the central districts have been upgraded, and several significant buildings have been restored.

Moreover, Krapiwna has recently passed certification for joining the "Association of the Most Beautiful Villages and Towns of the Country."
