In 1609, just 7 years after construction was completed, Smolensk was attacked by the Polish-Lithuanian troops of Sigismund III. The city walls helped the city hold out for a year and a half, playing a crucial role in the Russo-Polish War.
Nine towers were blown up during the retreat of Napoleon's troops. That marked the end of the wall as a unified structure — it fell apart into fragments.
Over time, the walls and towers deteriorated, and the residents built houses from the bricks of the destroyed sections. Today, about 3.3 km of wall and 18 towers remain. Each has its own name and a rich history.
