Chinese attempted to smuggle 2 kilograms of uranium through Russia from Georgia

As reported by Lasha Magradze, the first deputy head of Georgia's security service, three Chinese citizens were arrested in Tbilisi while trying to buy 2 kg of uranium and transport it to their homeland via Russia.

„The members of the criminal group planned to illegally purchase uranium in Tbilisi for 400,000 dollars and then transport it to China through the Russian Federation,” Magradze said at a press conference.

According to the investigation, a Chinese citizen who was illegally staying in Georgia organized the arrival of two other specialists from the People's Republic of China. Together, they began searching for uranium throughout the country, while their activities were coordinated from China.

The foreigners face up to 10 years in prison. Proceedings have been initiated against them under the article of the local criminal code regarding the illegal handling of nuclear material.

According to Reuters, there have been several serious incidents in Georgia recently related to the illegal trade of nuclear material. In July, a local resident and a Turkish citizen were arrested for the illegal acquisition of radioactive substances. These could have been used to make a bomb, according to intelligence agencies.
