Hans-Georg Maaßen, former president of the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, speaks openly about his observations and concerns regarding the current developments in our country.

Maaßen's path to the top of the Constitutional Protection Agency was anything but predetermined. After studying law, he specialised in commercial and international law, earned a doctorate in refugee law, and even worked in Japan for the Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Through the Federal Ministry of the Interior, he eventually entered counter-terrorism and became president of the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution in 2012. Today, he sees himself as a political activist fighting for the restoration of fundamental freedoms.

A central theme for him is the current developments in the judiciary. The search of publicist Norbert Bolz's home due to a tweet shows, in Maaßen's view, a worrying pattern. In February 2024, Bolz reacted to an article in the daily newspaper taz and wrote a tweet with historically charged phrasing as a satirical exaggeration.
