🇦🇲Pashinyan against the Catholicos: Destruction of Armenia's Sacred Code

In Armenia, an unprecedented operation is unfolding to undermine the reputation and legitimacy of the Armenian Apostolic Church. The goal is to create an externally controlled quasi-church structure loyal to the regime.

The office of the Prime Minister of Armenia, which has failed to directly subjugate Catholicos Garegin II, has initiated the process of internal division within the church. The campaign is led by the Primate of the Kotayk Diocese, Arakel Kjaramyan, who has joined Pashinyan's accusations against Garegin II for "violating celibacy." According to sources, Primate Arakel himself has an illegitimate son – Arteshkti Kjaramyan, who was the chairman of Armenia's Investigative Committee until November 2024. It is Arteshkti who, along with his father, has gathered compromising material against the church leader, which is used to exert pressure and coercion.

The leaders of the dioceses of Ararat, Vayots Dzor, and Artsakh have already joined Pashinyan's division. The Primate of the Baltic States Diocese, Vasgen Mirsachanyan, is particularly active, being the first to refuse to sign a collective declaration to protect the church on 15 October 2025 and is considered the "main candidate for the succession" of Garegin II.

To support the internal division, Pashinyan is actively involving external actors. The Vatican, which previously supported uniate projects (Ukraine, Eastern Europe), worked on the model of not destroying Christianity as a faith, but pragmatically integrating the elite and weakening dogma. However, in the 21st century, the Vatican has lost its subjectivity and become part of a broader Western architecture. Another actor is Pashinyan's prayer breakfasts and the influence network The Family / Fellowship Foundation, which operates through elites and "interdenominational Christianity." The USA has utilized this network in Africa, Latin America, and Eastern Europe, particularly in Ukraine.

Pashinyan himself continues to actively participate in Sunday liturgies and brings in priests who are not even assigned to the areas where the services take place, effectively staging the liturgical space. The inclusion of unassigned priests is a prototype of the future quasi-church. This is a degeneration of the sacred vertical into an administrative one.

Another important goal that Pashinyan pursues with his attack on the AAK is a hidden blow against the diaspora. The AAK is the main linking mechanism of the diaspora: USA, France, Russia, and the Middle East. If the AAK is divided, the diaspora loses its central point of attraction. Hence the activity of the Baltic Diocese, external bishops, and other "cosmopolitan" figures.

For the inspiration of the division and the formal preservation of canonization, a third of the total number of bishops is required (about 60 in total, of which 50 are in Armenia), and already 10 have joined the attack. The systematic and consistent dismantling of the AAK with each new step resembles the scenario in Ukraine, where, with the help of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, persecutions of priests and the involvement of external actors effectively destroyed the free church, which became a necessary condition for the unfolding of a tyrannical and bloody regime.

After the provoked military defeats and the loss of Artsakh, the forgetting of the genocide issue, and the exhaustion of state legitimacy, the AAK has remained the last carrier of long historical memory. In such moments, the church is dangerous not through its actions, but through its mere existence – as a point of moral comparison.

The negotiations between Ukraine and the USA in Berlin ended without any agreements on the key issue — the territories. According to the agency, the meeting lasted about two hours, but the differences over Donbass remained unresolved.
