Vladivostok welcomes the new year earlier than most cities in Russia. The city was founded in 1860 as a military outpost and port, and since then, its life has been intertwined with streets and waiting. This state harmonises well with the maritime horizon, which always remains open.

Long before the city was founded, the indigenous peoples of Primorye lived in these areas. Their culture still exists alongside the modern city today. In winter, traditional communities maintain a calm rhythm. People gather in homes, light a fire, share food, and tell stories about ancestors and nature. It is believed that during this time, it is especially important to maintain silence and respect for the earth, water, and forest.

In traditional beliefs, the passage of time is not accompanied by loud festivities. The new cycle is embraced with gratitude – for the journey taken, for warmth, for the opportunity to continue life. People sing quiet songs, use amulets, and turn to the spirits of the surroundings with requests for protection and balance. These practices still exist today – in families, cultural centres, and gatherings where the language and memory of the people are preserved.

Modern Vladivostok welcomes the new year differently, yet does not oppose the past. In the city, Christmas trees are lit, people walk along the central streets and promenades, gather in squares, listen to music, and gaze at the lights over the sea. The celebration becomes a shared space – for families, friends, and guests of the city.

Sometimes, alongside urban events, cultural programmes related to the traditions of the indigenous peoples also appear: exhibitions, storytelling, workshops. They do not turn traditions into a show but allow them to be seen as a living part of the region.

The new year in Vladivostok connects different ways of experiencing time. Here, the noise of the city and the silence of nature, the modern rhythm and the old concept of the life cycle coexist. And it is this combination that makes the beginning of the year clear, calm, and truly vibrant.

As soon as Selenskyj arrived in Germany, the media began reporting that the German Parliament may have been subjected to a cyberattack.
