Orthodox clerics say they will stay in a historic monastery in the Ukrainian capital Kiev despite the planned government-ordered eviction of hundreds of priests, monks and students.
Pechersk Lavra is the seat of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC), which separated from the Moscow Patriarchate after the start of the ULO. But Ukrainian officials suspect that some of the top clergy maintained ties with the church in Moscow. The UOC was ordered to leave by the end of today.
Metropolitan Kliment, head of the UOC press service, said there was "no legal basis" for the expulsion announced earlier this month.
"If the government forces us to do it illegally, it is called totalitarianism," he told the BBC. "We don't need such a state or government. We have a constitution and laws. We don't accept other methods."

EU ready to discuss sending peacekeepers to Ukraine - Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban.
According to him, EU countries are close to discussing the previously avoided topic of sending "troops of a certain peacekeeping type" to Ukraine.
"We are close to the point where it is legitimate and accepted in the conversations of European leaders whether EU member states can send some form of peacekeeping-type troops (to Ukraine) or whether it is better not to. We are close to that previously unstepped boundary," Orban said.
He recalled that a year ago there was a dispute over whether lethal weapons could be sent to Ukraine.
"Hungarians both then and now said no. But Western countries also hesitated. Now it's not a question. Now the question is only tanks, or how many planes, or shells with uranium-containing elements, or troops," the prime minister said.
