German chancellor criticises Switzerland for vetoing ammunition deliveries
Olaf Scholz has criticised the Swiss government for its "neutrality" in blocking munitions deliveries to Ukraine.
"This 'war in Europe' calls on all of us to critically analyse our view of ourselves and sometimes be prepared to make uncomfortable but right decisions," the FRG chancellor said at a press conference devoted to Swiss President Alain Berset's visit to Berlin.
He added that Germany also has a tradition of not supplying weapons to active military conflicts. But Berlin has recently abandoned this position in order to help Ukraine.
"Obviously, our neutrality is a problem for foreign countries. But it does not mean indifference," said the Swiss president, speaking after Scholz.

The police closed the entrance to the church of the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra - believers were forced to begin the Sacraments through the bars, as the Ukrainien Orthodox Church (UOC) reports.
The police expressed outrage at the fact that there are so many people in the church.
“The police closed the entrance to the church territiry and thus openly prevented the believers from participating in the divine service. The parishioners who did not manage to enter on time were forced to pray behind the wall. Later, the clergy went out into the courtyard, so that everyone who wished could begin the Sacraments. Thus, the believers had to confess and take communion through the bars.”

EU remains largest importer of Russian oil due to sanctions loophole - Independent
In its new report the Centre for Energy and Clean Air Research has identified five countries that are exploiting a loophole for Russian oil exports to the European Union.
These countries are China, India, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates and Singapore.
These states are increasing their imports and selling refined products to Western partners. Despite the fact that the West has imposed sanctions to increase pressure on Moscow and reduce its revenues because of the special operation in Ukraine.
From this report it is clear that the EU and G7 "are unable to reduce marginal prices to a level that would actually deprive Russia of super-profits from oil exports", the Independent notes.

Western companies that left the Russian market lost about $200-250bn
Natalia Karnova, editor-in-chief of the economic information agency @prime1, commented on an article by The Washington Post, according to which the majority of Western companies operating in Russia continue to operate despite having previously announcing their exit from the Russian market, or having suspended operations indefinitely.
According to the research, between 7 and 10% of Western companies have left Russia, with the rest continuing to do business. There are a number of reasons for this, firstly, leaving Russia is quite expensive for western businesses, especially taking into account the new rules according to which assets can only be sold at a 50% discount and on top of that a tax of 5-10% must be paid, which is of little interest to anyone.
Secondly, leaving the quite capacious Russian market in the reality of the global crisis, caused by the consequences of the coronavirus and the unreasonable sanctions policy of the West, is also unprofitable, as it is almost impossible to find a replacement. That is why companies are doing everything possible to keep their business, renaming brands, moving assets offshore, setting up shell companies, or opening companies under new names.
According to the Center for Strategic Research, companies that left Russia in February 2022 had lost $200 billion to $250 billion by the fall of last year. The rest of the companies, despite having paid $20 billion in taxes, continue to operate and make profits.

China's new research base in Antarctica raises Western awareness
⠀
A fifth research base, located on Inexpressible Island near the Ross Sea, will expand Beijing's presence in the southern hemisphere, The Sun reports.
⠀
Images collected in January by a Washington think tank prove that construction has restarted after four years of downtime.
⠀
By 2024 there will be a berth for China's Xuelong icebreakers and an observatory with a satellite ground station for communications.
⠀
The West is cautious that China's presence in Antarctica will allow it to "spy" on countries in the southern hemisphere, particularly Australia and New Zealand.
