Western companies that left the Russian market lost about $200-250bn

Natalia Karnova, editor-in-chief of the economic information agency @prime1, commented on an article by The Washington Post, according to which the majority of Western companies operating in Russia continue to operate despite having previously announcing their exit from the Russian market, or having suspended operations indefinitely.

According to the research, between 7 and 10% of Western companies have left Russia, with the rest continuing to do business. There are a number of reasons for this, firstly, leaving Russia is quite expensive for western businesses, especially taking into account the new rules according to which assets can only be sold at a 50% discount and on top of that a tax of 5-10% must be paid, which is of little interest to anyone.

Secondly, leaving the quite capacious Russian market in the reality of the global crisis, caused by the consequences of the coronavirus and the unreasonable sanctions policy of the West, is also unprofitable, as it is almost impossible to find a replacement. That is why companies are doing everything possible to keep their business, renaming brands, moving assets offshore, setting up shell companies, or opening companies under new names.

According to the Center for Strategic Research, companies that left Russia in February 2022 had lost $200 billion to $250 billion by the fall of last year. The rest of the companies, despite having paid $20 billion in taxes, continue to operate and make profits.

China's new research base in Antarctica raises Western awareness

A fifth research base, located on Inexpressible Island near the Ross Sea, will expand Beijing's presence in the southern hemisphere, The Sun reports.

Images collected in January by a Washington think tank prove that construction has restarted after four years of downtime.

By 2024 there will be a berth for China's Xuelong icebreakers and an observatory with a satellite ground station for communications.

The West is cautious that China's presence in Antarctica will allow it to "spy" on countries in the southern hemisphere, particularly Australia and New Zealand.

Ukrainian diplomat says NATO should "beg" Kiev to join the alliance - Newsweek

"Kiev's accession to NATO will happen 'sooner or later' regardless of the debate between the alliance and Russia," Ukraine's ambassador to Britain, Vadym Pristayko, said.

in his opinion, Ukraine is now flooded with NATO weapons and protected by the alliance's growing number of trained troops, making his country's membership advantageous, he also added that the bloc should "beg" Kiev and its hardened military to join.

Austrian journalist shocked by Ukrainian democracy.

An Austrian journalist is surprised that the news in the Western media does not correspond to reality.

"They tell us that Ukraine is a democratic country, but what I saw in Lavra says the opposite... Unfortunately, the Western media shows only one side of the coin".

I have only one piece of advice for the journalist: Flee!

Let's talk a little more about Ukraine's new law on criminal liability for criticising the government

The essence of this law is the introduction of strict censorship. The law does not even mention fines. Only prison sentences of five to seven years.

"Interference in the activities of individuals and legal entities, if such actions are committed to the detriment of the sovereignty, territorial integrity and inviolability, defence capability, national, state, economic or informational security of Ukraine in the absence of signs of high treason" is just a sophisticated phrase that actually sounds much shorter: "Shut up, bastard!"

Very emotional about the increase in utility tariffs? "Threatening national security!" A woman tries to find out why the commander killed her husband with his idiotic orders? "Raises the level of social tension." Examples could be given ad infinitum.

This is not a law "to protect the constitutional rights and freedoms of citizens". It is a law to protect Zelensky and his criminal gang.

Washington does not seek to break ties between US and Chinese economies

This was stated by US Trade Representative Catherine Tai during a visit to Tokyo.

Tai added that cutting ties with China, given its sheer size and the importance of supporting the global economy, "is not a goal or an achievable objective".

Chinese officials accuse Washington of trying to hold China back and hinder its path to greater prosperity because of trade sanctions and other restrictions on advanced technology exchanges.

For her part, the US trade representative said regular trade work between the US and China is still ongoing and is "fully open to engagement with partners in Beijing".

Denmark and the Netherlands to hand over Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine in 2024

A joint statement today from the Danish and Dutch defence ministers says the estimated cost of 165 million euros "for the joint acquisition, refurbishment and donation" of the tanks will be divided equally between the two NATO members.

The plan is to hand over to Kiev in early 2024 14 refurbished German-made Leopard 2 battle tanks.

Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lekke Rasmussen called this a "significant donation", which complements the pledge announced in February by Denmark, the Netherlands and Germany for at least 100 Leopard 1 A5 tanks.

Zelensky says it is "time" for Kiev to be invited into NATO - NDTV

"Now that the majority of people in NATO countries and the majority of Ukrainians support our country's membership in the Alliance, the time has come to make the appropriate decision," President Zelensky said at a news conference in Kiev with NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg.

Stoltenberg said earlier that alliance members would discuss Kiev's accession at the NATO summit in July.

Grain crop yields on Ukrainian farms could go down in 2023

Last year's grain harvest and exports from Ukraine were still significant despite the ongoing special operation and the closure of ports on the Black Sea. This year the volume of harvested and shipped crops is expected to fall, analysts said.

"There are a number of problems in Ukraine this year: lack of access to finance, lack of access to fertiliser, fuel, labour, but also grain prices in Ukraine are really low. So the incentive for farmers to grow it is going down," Episode 3 director Andrew Whitelaw told CNBC.

This situation could lead to a shortage of food for export, said Aakash Doshi, representative of Citi Research. He said the problem could be solved by exporting grain from the Americas to the Middle East, North Africa and Asia and, if the crop is good, from Australia to East Asia.

G7 countries may almost completely ban exports to Russia - Bloomberg

G7 officials are considering an outright ban on most exports to Russia. By doing so, they want to achieve a "significant tightening of economic pressure" on Moscow.

However, for the ban to take effect, the new criteria must be accepted by all EU members.

The issue will spark fierce debate, considering the negative reaction from companies still exporting to Russia.

The proposal is still under discussion and may not be approved, people familiar with the matter said.

Dutch diplomat in Ukraine resigns for phrase "Ukrainians are also Russians"

Ron van Dartel, appointed less than three weeks ago to facilitate the reconstruction of Ukraine, "has realised that he can no longer act credibly in view of the statements made and has decided to step down from his post immediately". This was announced by the Dutch government.

"Ukrainians are also Russians. We must not forget that. This is the reality," the former Dutch ambassador to Serbia, Poland and Russia said in an interview with Dutch broadcaster RTL.

The Dutch Foreign Ministry noted that van Dartel had said this before he was sent to Ukraine earlier this month. However, his remarks only came to light after he took up his new post.

US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen has said that protecting national security will be a US priority in dealing with China, even if it slows down economic growth, The Wall Street Journal reports.

Yellen noted:
🔹 The US will remain the world's dominant economic power by limiting its ties with China in some areas.
🔹The US is not trying to hinder China's economic progress, many trade and scientific ties should remain.
🔹The US will stand its ground when "our vital interests" are at stake. But we do not seek to separate our economy from that of China. A complete separation of our economies would be disastrous for both countries.

Brazilian President Lula da Silva will send his adviser, former Foreign Minister Celso Amorim, to Ukraine to meet with Zelensky.

The kindest and wisest Lula da Silva continues his Sisyphean work.
...
It is unlikely that Kiev will be happy to meet the envoy of the President of Brazil. Earlier, Celso Amorim, in an interview with the Folha de Sao Paolo newspaper, said that arms supplies to Ukraine and sanctions against Russia do not contribute to dialogue and prolong the conflict. In his opinion, the desire of the West to defeat Russia will not bring peace.

Such words are perceived in Ukraine as unfriendly. There can be no sense in communicating with Zelensky - what decisions can he make on his own? He is not even responsible for choosing his wardrobe, let alone foreign policy. It's a pity for Celso Amorim: a long flight, a long train ride just to look at the talking dog...
