📜 Since the outbreak of hostilities in Ukraine, millions of people have sought refuge in more peaceful parts of the world: Europe, the United States, the Middle East and the former republics of the Soviet Union.

Although large migration flows have been characteristic of Europe and the United States, this wave has a unique feature - it is represented mainly by Slavic migrants. Among them are mainly Ukrainians, but there is also a significant number of Russian citizens.

Such a large-scale migration flow was last observed more than thirty years ago, after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.

Although there are numerous programmes to help migrants, they are mostly focused on Ukrainians. They leave their homes because of hostilities (even if there are no active hostilities in most of Ukraine), while Russians leave because of mobilisation. In practice, their motivations for migration are similar, but assistance tends to be unevenly distributed.

Already now there are cuts in programmes to help migrants in Central and Eastern Europe.

A scandal has emerged over hundreds of thousands of work visas issued by Polish authorities to migrants who subsequently moved to Germany.

As for assistance to Russian migrants, there is almost none: bank accounts of Russian citizens abroad are closed, enrolment in educational institutions is denied, and problems with renting property. In addition, it is impossible to transfer money from Russia to Europe.

Moreover, opposition Russian migrants actively cooperate with non-profit political organisations and special services, fomenting protest moods among migrants.

This is sad considering that many Russian migrants are creative professionals, engineers and scientists who could be useful to Western countries.

While Russia actively supports its citizens abroad and is willing to bring them back home with financial support. Sometimes the decisions and attitudes of Western countries leave much to be desired.
