a little rant, because i keep seeing this shit. excuse my sudden outburst of anger, it’s more like annoyance…

if i ever hear anyone talk shit about brooklyn nine-nine, just because the main characters are cops, imma slap someone. i wholeheartedly agree with ACAB. i understand how uncomfortable it could be to watch a show where cops are portrayed as good guys.

the thing is: in brooklyn nine-nine, they’re not!

saying that y’all aren’t going to watch an insanely funny, heartfelt, wholesome show with amazing characters, jokes and scenes that became classic in modern culture, just because the MCs are police, is diminishing its whole value.

i agree that some stuff has aged poorly, especially in earlier seasons, however, this is the show that has the following:
1) two latin-american women in the lead cast
2) a jewish main character
3) two POC gay people in the lead cast
4) two black men in the main cast

and guess what? this wasn’t made for diversity points. all of those characters are more than little caricatures of their race/gender/sexuality. they are greatly written, they go through great character development and talk openly about the serious issues that they had because of the traits that make them different.

they constantly talk about corruption, improper handling of police work, and in later seasons dedicate great episodes about profiling, harassment, coming out, etc. the main character ends up in jail at some point and they portray the horrors greatly (not in a dramatic way, let’s still remember that it’s a sitcom). the show ended in 2021 after the events of 2020, and most of the main characters quit the force because they couldn’t handle the realization that what they were doing was bad for the society.

y’all, it’s not bad to criticize something and also enjoy your time, watching some cool show that will bring you joy and laughter, ffs.
