Improved Nym node reward scheme 🧭📈

The Nym network is powered by a decentralized community of node operators, and Nym is working closely with them to fairly reward their work.

Below are some of the major developments that have happened in the past month which improve the performance, capacity, and sustainability of the mixnet.

Botnets and backdoors: The free VPN trojan horse 🕸️

In the first installments of the Nym Dispatch, we will be focusing on the risks in using “free” VPN services.

As we will investigate throughout the series, many free VPNs can pose real threats to user privacy and security, and they almost always contain invasive practices like targeted advertising. This is the complete opposite of the main reason users turn to a VPN: genuine privacy, security, and anonymity online.

The 911 S5 botnet should be a wakeup call, but the problem goes much deeper.

Goodbye NymConnect, hello NymVPN 🥕☎️

Important changes for NymConnect and mixnet users.

In anticipation of the commercial launch of the NymVPN app, Nym will be phasing out the NymConnect interface in four weeks. The SOCKS5 client will remain active for developers and those looking to manually run the proxy through specific applications. By securing all user traffic with the click of a button, the NymVPN app will significantly improve access to the mixnet and give more comprehensive privacy protections for users.

Here’s what you need to know about the transition from NymConnect to NymVPN, as well as the possibility of continuing to use the SOCKS5 client.

Just like the 3 layers of nodes mixing traffic, the rewards of entry and exit gateways will also come from the mix mining pool. This raises an important question for the operator community to decide through a governance vote:

Should nodes acting as entry and exit gateways earn a larger share of rewards to compensate for their operational risks?

This is a complicated question, which is why we are bringing Nym Chief Scientist Chief Scientist Claudia Diaz and Tech Delivery Lead Igor Smirnov on this community call for a proper deepdive.

Meet Nym’s new Head of Marketing!

Nym is excited to welcome Robinson Jardin (@robjardin) to the Nym core team as Head of Marketing. Before joining Nym, Rob spent four years at NordVPN as the Head of Digital & Social Media, which he helped scale to over 14 million users. Rob will play a crucial role in building Nym’s marketing team, leading the efforts to launch NymVPN to the world.

Two things drew the Nym team to Rob: first, his experience in promoting a massively successful VPN product; and second, his lifelong obsession with all things design, from popular advertising to 16th century tapestries. Every technology needs a good design, and Rob is well-positioned to give NymVPN the public image it deserves as the world’s most trusted and private VPN.
