I know what you're thinking:

If this is the case, then why don't we use Pure Intonation today?

It is because it was a pain for the keyboard players. The truth is that if you tune your instrument perfectly (Pure) to a key, it will be out of tune in the other keys.

Many instruments can be easily retuned however, but the piano is not one of those instruments. It is also not easy for most people to obtain multiple pianos. Either a piano could only play in one maybe two keys, or you can't use it at all. That is why the Equal Temperament compromise was put into place, so that the piano players can play on one piano in any key and have it sound ok.

But here's the problem:

Because of this change, now EVERYTHING is on Equal Temperament, the tuning system that is literally out of tune.

Even when there are no keyboards present, everyone still uses Equal Temperament. That is because we are used to it and it is easy.

But do you know when Equal Temperament really becomes a serious problem? When you try to bring back the traditions of the Old World musical institution.

Equal Temperament was not the standard. The buildings themselves were specially tuned to specific overtones, and Pure Intonation (ie: tuning to natural overtones) was the standard more often than not.

All of our modern musical upbringing goes in direct opposition to the natural world and by extension, the Old World architecture. In order to tune yourself to the cathedrals, Pure Intonation must be practiced.

This means retuning for different keys and getting multiple different instruments for each key supported by the overtones of the building. This means obtaining at least 2 or 3 pianos. Cumbersome, isn't it? Well, that's how it was in the Old World. Music is very technical.

In conclusion, the way we tune our instruments today is not in tune with the natural world and definitely not in tune with the Old World architecture.

While discourse regarding which fundamental frequency is ideal (440Hz or 432Hz) may be something to look into, the reality is that the TUNING SYSTEM makes much more of a difference.

While it is true that Equal Temperament has its benefits, if we want to uncover more secrets that the Old World has to offer, our musical instruments may need to be adjusted to fit the Old World specifications, that being PURE Intonation, a perfect harmony with nature.

As a side note regarding which fundamental frequency you should use, do not focus on 440 vs 432. What you should really look into is what the ROOM is tuned to. That is what you should be basing your fundamental frequency on. A432Hz is more of a placebo than anything. It may have some effect, but if you want to be more in tune with your local cathedral, find out what the BUILDING itself is tuned to.
