In “Standing Up to the Emotional Plague” Dr. Whitener looks at the way the emotional plague was rationalized and became institutionalized as the Nazis implemented their malignant murderous campaign against European Jews. She contrasts this dark period in history with the subsequent creation of the State of Israel in 1948. The foundation of the Israeli State and its continued presence in the region today serves to check advances of the emotional plague.



In part IV of “No Exams Required,” Alexis Packer highlights recent examples of the anti-authoritarian transformation in the realm of higher education. In vignettes from New York’s New School, New York University, and UNC Chapel Hill, Packer chronicles growing disrespect for earned authority, confusion over standards, and the belief of some students that the university must provide for their emotional and biological needs.



Nana Hatzi, a teacher at a primary school in Northern Greece, recounts the story of a six-year-old boy who, having bloodied his knee on the playground, found himself surrounded by well-meaning teachers who told him there was no reason to cry. Hatzi offered to stay with the boy and gently allowed Nick to express his fear and sadness. After a few moments of crying, Nick relaxed, expressed his relief, and went back to play.



In “Functional Thinking in Everyday Life,” Dale Rosin, D.O. reflects on the process of clearing the stream that runs through his property in Pennsylvania. While forcibly unblocking the stream after heavy rain would effectively clear the debris, the sudden rush of water also damaged the stream’s banks. Later, Dr. Rosin tried patiently removing the blockage one twig at a time, allowing the stream’s natural flow to do the rest. This brief piece and the commentary offered by Peter Crist, M.D. highlight the application of functional thinking—working with, rather than against nature. Just as Dr. Rosin worked with the stream’s natural energy, the medical orgonomist addresses a patient’s blocks slowly, allowing for the gradual restoration of the patient’s own natural energy and movement.

In Afghanistan, amid war and endemic poverty, an ancient tradition — banned when the Taliban were in power — has re-emerged across the country: Many hundreds of boys, often as young as 11, are being lured off the streets on the promise of a new life, many unaware that their real fate is to be used for entertainment and sex. With remarkable access inside a sexual exploitation ring operating in Afghanistan, an Afghan journalist investigates this illegal practice, talking with the boys and their masters, and documenting how the Afghan authorities responsible for stopping these crimes are sometimes themselves complicit in the practice.

The Dancing Boys of Afghanistan reveals how countless numbers of Afghan boys, who are sometimes as young as ten years old, are lured off the streets with the promise of a new and better life. This horrific practice is known as Bacha Bazi and involves young boys who are sold to particular powerful businessmen and warlords to be trained as unique dancers, who perform for a male crowd while dressed in women’s clothing and are later traded and used for sex.

The Dancing Boys of Afghanistan takes a look inside this sexual exploitation ring through the eyes of award-winning Afghan journalist, Najibullah Quraishi. It goes a step further by examining the consequences of this illicit trade, which is often neglected due to a larger focus on the war situation in the region, and the lack of support by the authorities in tackling the problem.

The Genius And The Boys | Bosse Lindquist

The documentary investigates late American Nobel laureate Carleton Gajdusek's enigmatic discoveries. Gajdusek discovered mad cow disease in Papua New Guinea in the fifties, as well as twenty previously unknown stone-age peoples and languages. From the late 1940's and onwards he commuted the world, focusing on the most isolated peoples still remaining on the globe. He adopted 57 children to his commune at the National Institutes of Health, MA, USA -most of them boys. In the late 90's he was charged with having abused one of the boys in his care - a then 16-year-old boy from Micronesia. The film reveals how Gajdusek in fact was a self-proclaimed pedophile, who admitted to having had sex with numerous other children as well. One man who was abused in childhood is interviewed in the film, as well as several legendary scientists who were friends of Gajdusek and deemed the sexual parts of his character as of less importance.
