#PeoplesHistory | Today marks the beginning of the Easter Rising of 1916 in Ireland.

During Easter week of 1916, Irish independence rebels led by figures like Patrick Pearse and James Connolly, seized key government buildings in Dublin and proclaimed an Irish Republic. Their goal was complete independence from British colonial control.

The armed insurrection against British colonialism and the first proclamation of the Irish Republic, "was not just a seminal event in Irish history, but also in world history, since it was a blow against British imperialism from within," as Graham Harrington from the Communist Party of Ireland (CPI) told Peoples Dispatch in 2023.

Though violently crushed by the British, the Easter Rising gave momentum, energy, and popular support to the Irish republican cause. Years later, the Irish Republican Army forced Britain to the negotiating table, winning independence for (most of) Ireland.

On the 80th anniversary of liberation from Nazi-fascism, left forces in Italy mobilized against genocide, armament, and the Meloni government.

For many grassroots organizations, this year's events aimed to connect the values that inspired partisan fighters in the 1940s with today's context. This is characterized by a strong rearmament agenda, support for Israel's genocide in Gaza, and domestic repression of civil rights.

#PeoplesHistory | On April 28, 1967, Boxing legend and civil rights activist Muhammad Ali, refused induction into the United States Army, citing that the enemies of Black, poor and working-class people of the US weren't in Vietnam, but in the US.

That same day, Ali was arrested for violating the draft law, the New York State Athletic Commission suspended his boxing license, and he was stripped of his world heavyweight champion noscript from the World Boxing Association. He was unable to fight until 1971 when his conviction was overturned. Despite the heavy campaign against him, Ali stood firm and instead of being isolated, he became a major figure in the anti-war and civil rights movements.
