🇦🇷 The people stand with Cristina

Since the Argentine judiciary ratified the conviction of former president, Cristina Fernández de Kirchner (CFK), thousands have been rallying outside her home in a permanent vigil. Yesterday, tens of thousands mobilized in the Plaza de Mayo, the iconic square in front of the Casa Rosada presidential palace, to protest the political persecution of the progressive leader.

In what has been labeled as a new case of lawfare, full of irregularities, the Supreme Court ruled that CFK must serve six years of house arrest and, more importantly, that she be banned from working in the public sector for the rest of her life. Many analysts say the case is pure political persecution.

Pro-Palestine activist and Columbia graduate Mahmoud Khalil has finally been released from ICE custody on June 20 – following over three months of detention. He was forced to languish in ICE detention over 1,000 miles away from his wife, Noor Abdalla, with immigration authorities denying his request to be by Abdalla’s side for the birth of their first child.

Upon release from the GEO Group-run ICE detention center, Khalil briefly addressed reporters. “Trump and his administration, they chose the wrong person for this,” Khalil said. But no one “should be detained for actually protesting a genocide, for protesting their university, Columbia University, that is investing in the genocide of the Palestinian people,” he told reporters.

After more than 50 days of protests, the strike in Panama continues. The US-NATO destruction of the Libyan state (2011) and this US-Israeli attack on Iran now proves to countries across the Global South that if they want to protect their sovereignty then building up a conventional army is insufficient.

In the wake of the US-Israeli war on Iran, Stephanie Weatherbee Brito of the International Peoples’ Assembly emphasizes the need for popular forces to take to the streets and oppose imperialist aggression in the West Asia region.

She writes: “If there is to be a defeat of US imperialism, it will come from the mobilization of people – from workers, students, peasants, and revolutionaries around the world. Anti-imperialist states may be allies, but they will not be enough to undo the unipolar order. The agency, the initiative, and the responsibility to resist lies with us. Relying on others to fight our battles is folly. Let’s organize. Let’s mobilize. The struggle is ours.”

“If capitalism doesn’t resolve the crisis, people might remember socialism,” reflected Gyula Thürmer of the Hungarian Workers’ Party during a discussion on the far right in Europe. Thürmer was speaking at the Fascism Back in Europe? conference, organized by the Zetkin Forum in Berlin from June 20-22. His comment encapsulated one of the lingering themes of the conference: how the economic crisis, corporate domination, and historical revisionism are fueling the rise of authoritarian and far-right forces across both Eastern and Western Europe.
