“Military spending will enrich the arms industry. The bulk of this money will go to large American, Turkish, and Israeli companies. Around 40% will end up in the hands of Europe’s own arms giants: Leonardo, Rheinmetall, Thales,” said Potere al Popolo’s (Power to the People) Marta Collot during the protest

Heads of state from NATO member countries are gathered in The Hague from June 24 to 25 for a summit expected to substantially increase Europe’s military budgets.

Few countries have (slightly) pushed back against the armament agenda. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez called the proposed targets “counterproductive” and contrary to his administration’s welfare goals. Belgian and Slovak authorities expressed similar reservations, but early remarks from NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte suggested little understanding for different opinions during the summit.

After several months of intense debate, the government of Colombian President Gustavo Petro, achieved a new political victory and a key campaign promise when the legislature approved his long-awaited labor reform bill. The president signed it into law on June 25.

Peoples Dispatch spoke with María Fernanda Carrascal, Colombian congresswoman of the Pacto Histórico (ruling party), a member of the Seventh Commission of the House of Representatives and the speaker of the Labor Reform bill.

Carrascal stated that the labor reform, “was not only a campaign promise of Petro and of our political project but it is also the intergenerational construction of a need for justice for working people, something that workers had been seeking for decades, after the backwards reform [passed during Uribe’s government] took away many rights, purchasing power, reduced their wage income, in short, it made them precarious in every possible way.”

“The attempt to ban a political protest group, and effectively brand them a ‘terrorist’ organization is unprecedented,” Palestine Action stated.

Palestine Action insists its members are “teachers, nurses, students and parents who take part in actions disrupting the private companies who are arming Israel’s genocide, by spray painting or entering their factory premises” – a far cry from inciting violence or engaging in terrorism.

#PeoplesHistory | Today is the birthday of Salvador Allende, the first socialist president of Chile. Though his presidency was brief, Allende left an indelible mark on history by nationalizing key industries, most notably copper, and advancing sweeping social reforms aimed at redistributing wealth and expanding access to housing, education, and healthcare.

His democratic socialist project was violently interrupted on September 11, 1973, when a US-backed coup led by General Augusto Pinochet overthrew his government. The coup not only ended Allende’s life but also dismantled Chile’s democratic institutions and installed a brutal dictatorship.

Allende died defending his vision of socialism, staying true to his principles until the very end — choosing death over surrender as he defended the presidential palace with a rifle in his hands.
