Celebrations broke out in shock and joy throughout New York City as New Yorkers learned that in all likelihood, their next mayor would be a socialist who dared to promise an end to rent increases, city-run grocery stores, and free buses – all amid years of skyrocketing cost of living.

#PeoplesHistory | Today is the birthday of Salvador Allende, the first socialist president of Chile. Though his presidency was brief, Allende left an indelible mark on history by nationalizing key industries, most notably copper, and advancing sweeping social reforms aimed at redistributing wealth and expanding access to housing, education, and healthcare.

His democratic socialist project was violently interrupted on September 11, 1973, when a US-backed coup led by General Augusto Pinochet overthrew his government. The coup not only ended Allende’s life but also dismantled Chile’s democratic institutions and installed a brutal dictatorship.

Allende died defending his vision of socialism, staying true to his principles until the very end — choosing death over surrender as he defended the presidential palace with a rifle in his hands.

#PeoplesHistory | 🇦🇷Today we remember Maximiliano Kosteki and Darío Santillán — two piqueteros and working-class activists in Argentina’s mass social movements of the early 2000s. They were part of a wave of protests led by the poor and unemployed against neoliberalism, IMF-imposed austerity, and government submission to financial capital.

They were murdered by the police, and authorities — alongside much of the corporate media — attempted to cover up the crime. However, the work of independent journalists, human rights organizations, and photojournalists helped expose the truth and keep their legacy alive.

What was meant to be a solemn commemoration of the first anniversary of the historic anti-Finance Bill protests in Kenya turned chaotic as police clashed with demonstrators across several cities.

“The protests now symbolize indictments of the system itself – a system defined by authoritarianism, police violence, austerity, foreign domination, and the privatization of every public good. The state responded as expected – not with dialogue, but with bullets,” Rodgers, a grassroots organizer with the Nairobi chapter of the Social Justice Movement, told Peoples Dispatch.

The truth is that the term “capture” is not entirely appropriate. Fito’s apprehension is actually a “recapture”. In January 2024, the country was shocked to learn that Fito had escaped from jail, despite the immense resources that the government had allocated to the prisons to prevent that kind of mishap.

Furthermore, Noboa announced his intention to extradite the leader of Los Choneros to the US, where there is an open investigation against Fito in the New York District Court for arms and drug trafficking: “We have done our part to proceed with the extradition of Fito to the United States, we are awaiting your response.”

Some analysts interpret Noboa’s statement as an admission of the state’s failure to keep high-profile detainees in its custody without risking their escape.

Less than half of all health facilities in the Gaza Strip remain partially operational and capable of providing basic primary care and surgery, the Al Mezan Center for Human Rights warned.

Israeli attacks have rendered nearly all hospitals in northern Gaza non-functional, destroying dialysis units, oncology departments, and rehabilitation centers. The threat of total shutdown is now advancing into the southern governorates: the European Hospital has already been forced to close due to the attacks, and the Nasser Medical Center could be next in line.

China advised NATO leadership to “examine their behavior” and let go of their “Cold War mentality, block confrontation and zero-sum approach”, claiming that his country only seeks to “uphold its sovereignty, security, and development interests and continue to do its part to make the world a more peaceful and stable place.”
