The Colombian House of Representatives approved the pension reform bill that had previously been approved by the Senate.

The reform had been held up for almost a year after the Constitutional Court (CC) asked Congress to rectify a procedural error. The House of Representatives did not modify any substantial aspect of the reform, so the so-called “conciliation” process between both branches of the legislature won’t be necessary.

“I’d rather die than be a white man’s slave.” – Joseph Cinqué

Today we remember the La Amistad slave ship uprising — a defining moment in the resistance against the Transatlantic Slave Trade — which took place 186 years ago today.

Contrary to the myth of passive submission, enslaved Africans resisted at every stage of the Transatlantic Slave Trade. Historians estimate that between 15% and 20% of slave ships departing Africa never reached the “New World.” Many were overtaken by the captives themselves.

Hale Aspacio Woodruff, the renowned muralist who studied with Diego Rivera, immortalized this historic rebellion in his three-panel mural series “The Amistad Mutiny”, depicting the uprising, the Supreme Court trial, and the return to Africa.

In Palestine, agriculture is a form of resistance against the Israeli occupation.

It is difficult to imagine the existence of agriculture and food production in Gaza, where there is no security, no peace, and even less arable land. The existence of arable land, untouched by Israel’s devastating bombing campaign, or even the possibility to have freedom to move and tend to the land in Gaza, are distant dreams. In the West Bank, however, agriculture is still a reality.

Growing up in Venezuela and now living in the United States, I’ve always felt caught between two independence days: July 4 and July 5. Two celebrations. Two flags. Two very different ideas of what it means to be free.

#PeoplesHistory | 🇨🇩Today we celebrate the life and legacy of Patrice Lumumba, the Congolese revolutionary leader and spearhead of his country’s independence. Born 100 years ago, Lumumba dedicated his life to the struggle for freedom, dignity, and self-determination in the face of colonial domination.

As the first prime minister of the newly independent Democratic Republic of the Congo, Lumumba stood unwavering in his commitment to African unity, national sovereignty, and the liberation of working people. A powerful orator and organizer, he led the Congolese National Movement (MNC), uniting people across ethnic and regional lines in the fight against Belgian colonialism and imperialist interference.

Despite his short time in power, Lumumba’s vision for a free and just Congo inspired millions across Africa and the world.
