Today we remember the La Amistad slave ship uprising — a defining moment in the resistance against the Transatlantic Slave Trade — which took place 186 years ago today.
Contrary to the myth of passive submission, enslaved Africans resisted at every stage of the Transatlantic Slave Trade. Historians estimate that between 15% and 20% of slave ships departing Africa never reached the “New World.” Many were overtaken by the captives themselves.
Hale Aspacio Woodruff, the renowned muralist who studied with Diego Rivera, immortalized this historic rebellion in his three-panel mural series “The Amistad Mutiny”, depicting the uprising, the Supreme Court trial, and the return to Africa.

The existence of arable land, untouched by Israel’s devastating bombing campaign, or even the possibility to have freedom to move and tend to the land in Gaza, are distant dreams. In the West Bank, however, agriculture is still a reality.
