Israel’s recognition of Somaliland (a separatist enclave in Somalia’s northwest) as a sovereign entity has provoked a global outcry, with 14 of the 15 UN Security Council (UNSC) members opposing it at the emergency meeting convened on December 29. The US was the only country defending Israel’s action at the meeting in New York, convened at the request of Somalia.

Others argued that the move undermines Somalia’s sovereignty and raised concerns about its destabilizing effects on the Red Sea region.

Defending Israel’s position before the Council, its Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, Jonathan Miller, claimed before the UNSC that during the civil war, Somalia had committed a “genocide” against the Isaaq clan, which controls Somaliland.

It is “ridiculous and unbelievable” that the “occupying power in Palestine” that is “killing and maiming hundreds of thousands”, starving “innocent people”, and forcibly displacing “the whole community” is “lecturing us” about “genocide”, retorted Somali envoy Osman. “If we want to talk about genocide, it is Israel that is committing” it before “our own eyes every day”.

Explosions were reported at key military bases and other sites across the Venezuelan capital of Caracas and surrounding areas in the early hours of Saturday, January 3. The Venezuelan government said in an official statement that the attack was perpetrated by the United States and constitutes a “grave military aggression” against “Venezuelan territory and population”.

🇻🇪 Venezuela’s Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello spoke from the streets of Caracas hours after the US attacks, calling upon international organizations to reject the US attacks on Venezuela or “finally public reveal their complicity in the face of the invasion and attack, in the face of the murder of civilians.”

🇻🇪 Venezuelan people were out on the streets in defense of their country just hours after the US launched unilateral military strikes against the country and kidnapped President Nicolás Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores.

As of now, there is no official casualty toll from the attacks but Venezuelan officials reported that several strikes were carried out against civilian areas across the city of Caracas.

🇻🇪🇮🇳 "Down with imperialism"

Trade unionists from across India, meeting in Visakhapatnam for the All India Conference of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions, mobilized against the illegal US attack on Venezuela and kidnapping of legitimately elected President Nicolás Maduro and the first combatant Cilia Flores, who were reportedly taken by US troops inside Venezuela.

The conference of Indian trade unionists unanimously adopted a resolution strongly condemning US imperialist aggression and the bombing of Venezuelan territory. The resolution also called for the immediate release of President Nicolás Maduro.

The attack on January 3 is part of the US war that began in 2001 and will continue long after the engines of the Chinook helicopters cool down.

The outcome of this attack on Venezuela is unclear. The government remains in control, even with the President having been kidnapped. The people of Venezuela are in shock but defiant. It is unclear if the United States will strike again, or if the US government has a clear political plan for the aftermath of this strike.

The attack on Venezuela was timed so that Trump could stand before the US houses of Congress on January 4, when he will give his annual address, and claim that he has scored a major victory. This is not a victory. It is just another example of unilateralism that will not improve the situation in the world. The US illegal war on Iraq ended with the US forced to withdraw after a million civilians had been killed in a ruthless decade; the same transpired in Afghanistan and Libya – two countries ruined by the American Eagle.

🇻🇪 Tens of thousands filled the streets of Caracas, Venezuela today, January 4, to protest the US attacks on Venezuela as well as the illegal kidnapping of their President Nicolás Maduro. They also emphasized that the country is still being run by the Venezuelan people and their elected officials, not Trump, despite claims that the US is going to "run the country".

Italian activist and national coordinator of Potere al Popolo, Giuliano Granato, spoke at a mass mobilization in Naples where people condemned the US bombing of Caracas, Venezuela, and the illegal kidnapping of constitutional president Nicolás Maduro.

People around the world have been protesting these latest attacks carried out by the United States and the Trump administration on the Venezuelan people and their sovereignty.

The current US attacks against Venezuela are part of a two-decade process led by the US and the Venezuelan right wing to undermine the Bolivarian project and its bold decision to use the country’s oil wealth for the betterment of its people.
