On January 7, a US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent fatally shot a woman in the head in a residential neighborhood in south Minneapolis, firing into her vehicle at point-blank range. The woman was later identified by authorities as 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good.

A neighbor who saw what happened told local MPR news: “She was trying to turn around, and the ICE agent was in front of her car, and he pulled out a gun … and shot her in the face like three, four times.”

Witnesses said she died immediately.

Within hours, federal officials presented a starkly different account from what eyewitnesses reported.

In a tweet on his Truth Social platform, US President Donald Trump accused Good of “violently, willfully, and viciously” running over an ICE agent with her vehicle. The agent then “shot her in self-defense,” he claimed. US Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem said the 37-year-old woman was killed after carrying out an alleged “act of domestic terrorism”.

Left parties and rights groups condemned India’s top court on Monday, January 5, after it denied bail to activists Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam even after spending more than five years in prison without trial.

Progressive groups termed the denial of bail a violation of the fundamental right of liberty, accusing the Narendra Modi-led government of persecuting opposition voices and political dissent.

Both Khalid and Imam were student activists involved in popular mobilizations against amendments in the country’s citizenship law (Citizenship Amendment Act or CAA) brought by the Hindu supremacist, ultra-right-wing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government in 2019.

Prime ministers and chancellors across Europe appear increasingly worried that the United States could soon move to occupy Greenland in one form or another, following fresh statements by US President Donald Trump about the territory’s importance to national and international security – code, many agree, for US strategic interests.

“If European leaders apply international law selectively – tough on rivals, permissive toward allies – they undermine the only shield that protects small countries, including themselves,” Peter Mertens, general secretary of the Workers’ Party of Belgium (PTB-PVDA), warned. “The result is predictable: more blackmail, more sanctions, and more violence as a method of negotiation. Greenland is the next announced victim of this submission.”

The Syrian authorities also reported the displacement of 140,000 people as a result of the unrest, which officials described as the fiercest confrontations between the two sides since they reached the integration agreement in March 2025.
