Ugandans are casting their ballots today in a highly tense contested presidential election, but many are doing so amid an ongoing nationwide internet shutdown that has cut off public access to social media, web services, and messaging platforms.

The election pits incumbent President Yoweri Museveni, 81, against eight presidential challengers, led by Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, 43, a musician-turned-politician whose supporters say they have faced repeated harassment throughout the campaign.

Museveni has been in power since 1986, making this his seventh bid for the presidency and extending a rule that now spans over four decades.

The US Department of State announced on Tuesday, January 13, that it designated the chapters of the Muslim Brotherhood in Jordan, Egypt and Lebanon as “terrorist”, over allegations of them posing “a threat to the United States”.

Analysts assume that the Trump administration’s sanctions on the targeted organizations aims to further tighten the stranglehold on Hamas, by intimidating its supporters – on the political and popular levels – before an agreement on phase two of the US-brokered Gaza ceasefire deal is reached.

By doing so, the United States and Israel hope to push Hamas to concede being part of any future Palestinian government that would rule post-war Gaza.

🇨🇺 Cubans honor 32 combatants killed by the US in Venezuela.

The people of Cuba and its armed forces honored the 32 Cubans who were killed by US forces during the illegal attack on Venezuela and kidnapping of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, on January 3. The remains of the 32 were repatriated to Cuba and honored in Havana at the Ministry of the Revolutionary Armed Forces.

Witkoff clarified that the next phase will see the establishment of what he called the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza (NCAG), a transitional technocratic Palestinian administration in Gaza that is supposed to run daily affairs in the war-torn enclave.

Meanwhile, rebuilding the severely-devastated territory, and the disarmament of all Palestinian resistance groups, which the US envoy described as “unauthorized personnel”, constitute the other two major aspects of the upcoming phase.

The government of Iran claimed that the United States is making false accusations against the country in its latest attempt to “fuel tensions” in the region. It dismissed the US allegation of attacks on American bases in the region, warning that any move to militarily target Iran would be retaliated.

The comments were made by the spokesperson of the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Esmail Baghaei, in a press conference in response to a post on the US Deparment of State’s Farsi page, claiming Iran is preparing to launch attacks on its bases in the region.

The government of Somalia terminated all agreements with the United Arab Emirates on January 12, ending defense and security cooperation.

The UAE, which the Somali government accused of undermining its sovereignty, has long used its military bases in Somalia and control over its ports to fuel wars in Sudan and Yemen.

Relations with the Somali government began to sour amid reports that the UAE had facilitated the negotiations leading up to Israel becoming the only country in the world to recognize Somaliland – a separatist enclave in northern Somalia – as a sovereign country.

Since the launch of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) last year, a USD 5 billion mega-project and Africa’s largest hydroelectric development, tensions between Ethiopia, Egypt, and Sudan have steadily escalated.

The dispute has drawn renewed attention from the US, with President Donald Trump indicating he will intervene. Egypt has welcomed potential US involvement.

The GERD has long been a source of contention. Egypt and Sudan argue that the dam violates principles of international water law, particularly the obligation not to cause significant harm to downstream states. Hundreds of thousands of Indian farmers, workers, Indigenous peoples and Dalits are marching for land rights and against the policies of the far-right BJP government of Narendra Modi. Vijoo Krishnan, president of All India Kisan Sabha and a national leader of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI-M), has vowed that the agitation and marches will continue and grow until the Modi government meets all their demands.

A recent report produced by a committee of experts presented new findings on the murder of social and environmental activist Berta Cáceres.

The report concludes that the murder of Berta Cáceres was a corporate, financial, and political crime, whose implications transcend an individual murder, as it affects human rights defenders and the regulation of megaprojects in indigenous territories.

Furthermore, it empirically demonstrated how the resources of “development projects” can be used for social repression and political assassination, as well as to infiltrate private interests into institutions clearly and forcefully.
