A recent report produced by a committee of experts presented new findings on the murder of social and environmental activist Berta Cáceres.

The report concludes that the murder of Berta Cáceres was a corporate, financial, and political crime, whose implications transcend an individual murder, as it affects human rights defenders and the regulation of megaprojects in indigenous territories.

Furthermore, it empirically demonstrated how the resources of “development projects” can be used for social repression and political assassination, as well as to infiltrate private interests into institutions clearly and forcefully.

#PeoplesHistory | Today, on his death anniversary, we remember the revolutionary anti-colonial leader Amílcar Cabral, who tirelessly fought for Pan-Africanism and for the independence of Guinea-Bissau and Cape Verde from Portuguese colonial rule. Cabral was assassinated on January 20, 1973, before Guinea-Bissau and Cape Verde won their independence, in a plot backed and supported by the Portuguese.

An agricultural engineer, organizer, and political leader, Cabral became one of the most essential Pan-Africanist thinkers and anti-colonial revolutionaries in history. Forced into exile by Portuguese colonial powers, he helped create the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) and later founded the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC).

His contributions to National Liberation Marxism continue to inform movements and inspire millions today.

The farmers-led Communist Party of India (Marxist) has accused the ultra-right wing government in both the state and at the center of failure to implement existing laws protecting their rights.

Carrying banners and red flags, the marchers walked from Charoti to Manore on the first day, and from Manore to Palghar on the second day, covering a total distance of almost 50 kilometers on foot. Led by Vinod Nikole, an elected member of the Maharashtra state legislature, marchers shouted slogans and sang songs while walking through the highways.

At the level of the European Union, Belgian MEP Marc Botenga warned that existing rules and safeguards are being pushed aside to accelerate the new military-industrial strategy.

He pointed to recent discussions around so-called omnibus legislative packages, particularly proposals designed to ease the operations of the arms industry at the expense of labor rights, environmental protections, and social welfare systems. All measures introduced under what he described as a militarization of rules agenda carry clear social consequences, Botenga said – yet top EU officials are silent on this dimension of the plans they are championing.

In an almost admission of guilt, western powers are starting to denounce what the Global South has been saying for decades, the supposed International “Order” only benefits the most powerful: the United States.

At the World Economic Forum in Davos, the balance of international power appears to be shifting. Mark Carney, Prime Minister of Canada, stated in his address that “this fiction was useful” at some point, but now “we are in the midst of a rupture, not a transition.”

Syrian armed groups loyal to President Ahmad al-Sharaa broke the resistance of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), the largely Kurdish group, but this advance can only be understood by the total backing given by the United States to the Syrian government.

The civil war in Sudan, which has continued for over 1,000 days, is spilling over its western borders into Chad and threatening to destabilize a regime that is already walking a tight rope.

“We cannot have our defense and security forces dragged into the conflict,” Chadian government spokesperson Gassim Cherif said in a news conference, revealing that seven Chadian soldiers had been killed two days earlier by Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

“Come out, fight. Fight for your brother, fight for your sister, fight for your sibling.”

Momentum toward a statewide general strike is rapidly building in Minnesota, as unions, businesses, students, and community organizations prepare to shut down work, schools, and commerce on January 23, in response to the killing of Renee Macklin Good and the expanding presence of Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE) in the Twin Cities.

“The Indian government should stay away from such proposals and stand resolutely in defense of Palestine and other countries of the Global South that are threatened by the US imperialist ambitions.”

Left parties in India called upon the central government not to join the so-called Board of Peace launched by the US as part of President Donald Trump’s Peace Plan for Gaza, claiming it would be a betrayal to Palestinians and antithetical to the country’s long-term commitments to the UN.

“India’s participation in such a Board, which does not respect Palestinian rights, would constitute a grave betrayal of the Palestinian cause,” the country’s five major left parties claimed in a joint statement issued on Wednesday, January 21.

Tens of thousands across the United States took to the streets on January 20 to protest the Donald Trump administration, one year since he took office for a second term.

“We are not backing down. We’re here to stay and we’re here to fight,” said Kadija, a Somali small business owner in Minneapolis.

Hundreds of Somali-owned businesses are joining a multi-sector general strike on January 23, as communities across Minnesota mobilize to demand ICE out of the state.

Claims by the Trump administration that the Somali community committed “billions of dollars in fraud” have largely been debunked, or were left unsubstantiated. However, the accusations were used to justify the initial deployment of 2,000 militarized ICE officers to the Minneapolis area.

The rhetoric (aimed squarely at the Somali community) continues to be repeated by federal officials as they defend the operation. At the same time, ICE violence continues to escalate across Minnesota. Most recently, ICE arrested two teenagers in south Minneapolis on January 22, as reported by MPR News.

The British government continues to push National Health Service (NHS) institutions to implement a contract with Palantir – a US tech firm complicit in Israel’s genocide in Gaza and in ongoing ICE violence in the United States – despite risks to data protection, health sovereignty, and access to care.

A discussion coordinated by the Peace and Justice Project on Tuesday, January 20, brought together researchers, activists, and health workers to examine the likely consequences of the plan.

The issue is not new to activists: many local initiatives have already opposed the NHS becoming reliant on Palantir products. Yet speakers emphasized that broader engagement is now essential. Duncan McCann of the Good Law Project stressed that patients, health workers, and policymakers alike must understand that the deal has “real impacts on NHS functioning.” “It’s not just esoteric concerns,” he said.

Minnesota is on the brink of a historic general strike!

Workers, students, unions, small businesses, and communities are mobilizing to shut down the Twin Cities and the broader state on Jan 23. They demand justice for Renee Good and ICE out of Minnesota as resistance to Trump’s agenda surges.

Organizers on the ground say the 23rd could serve as an example of the power of the general strike for working people across the United States, as cities concerned about ICE violence look towards Minneapolis for answers about how to resist and force a change at the federal level.
