We say goodbye to Michael Parenti, who passed this weekend. The US Marxist and political scientist was an uncompromising critic of capitalism and empire. Parenti’s work exposed the structural violence and exploitation imposed on working and subaltern classes across the world.

His analysis remains relevant today as working-class resistance to state violence continues to build in the US.

Devastating fires in Chile continue to ravage the south of the country. The magnitude of the damage compelled the center-left government of Gabriel Boric to declare a “state of catastrophe” in several regions of the country, including Ñuble, Bío Bío, and La Araucanía.

The fires began on January 17. So far, more than 280 fires have been recorded, of which about 139 have been brought under control. According to authorities, more than 20 people have died, and tens of thousands have been forced to evacuate their homes immediately. The Ministry of Public Works reported that more than 2,000 tons of debris have been removed from the disaster areas.

#PeoplesHistory | Today, we remember Howard Zinn, the US historian who brought the people's perspective to the fore with his groundbreaking book "A People's History of the United States".

Zinn was a prolific writer, a renowned socialist intellectual, a veteran of World War II, and a popular educator whose insights into recent events would’ve been most valuable for the US working class.

Health conditions in Gaza remain critical as the Israeli occupation, despite the ongoing so-called ceasefire, continues to undermine the provision of health services and access to care.

Dr. Ahmed Muhanna from Al-Awda Hospital told The New Arab that “a widespread increase in infections has been observed, particularly among children.” Dr. Mohammed Abu Salmiya of Al-Shifa Hospital added: “The danger lies in the weakened immunity of people in Gaza due to famine, malnutrition, and the lack of necessary vaccinations, which has created a serious threat to patients’ lives.”

“Food, shelter, a protective family, healthcare, and education. Those are the five essential things every child needs,” pediatrician Dr. Tanya Haj-Hassan insisted in an interview with the Institute for Palestine Studies (IPS). “And in Gaza, every single one of these has been targeted.”

After the US attack on Venezuela on January 3, the US has continued its interventionist measures. Trump openly vowed to cut off oil and financial support to the island of Cuba, reviving decades-old imperial intimidation. Cuba responded not with fear, but with mass mobilization. Nearly half a million people marched through Havana to honor the 32 Cuban combatants killed in Venezuela and to reaffirm their refusal to surrender to aggression.

In conversation with Peoples Dispatch, Cuban writer Abel Prieto and former ambassador José R. Cabañas explain how this attack signals a dangerous new phase of US interventionism and why it has also strengthened anti-imperialist resolve across Latin America.

🇻🇪🇨🇺 “Marco Rubio you and Trump are thugs! Hands off Venezuela! Hands off Cuba!”

A CodePink organizer named Leo disrupted Marco Rubio’s Senate address to denounce the policy of sanctions and interventionism of the Trump administration in Latin America, where US military forces have been “bombing and stealing and kidnapping.” Anti-war protests have been erupting in the US, both against the international crimes perpetrated by the federal government as well as against the domestic abuses committed by ICE and CBP.

#PeoplesHistory | 🇨🇺 Today, we remember the Cuban independence leader and writer José Martí, a symbol of Latin American unity against imperialism.

Martí was a Cuban poet, thinker, and an essential figure in the Cuban struggle for independence from Spain. Through his writing and undeterred leadership, he became an icon of liberation and freedom for all in Latin America and the Caribbean, reaching the heights of Simón Bolivar and Augusto Sandino. Martí coined the concept of "Our America", a political, social, cultural, and economic alternative to the America subjugated by US imperialism.
