We have completed the research and development stage for the operations acceleration task on the TON blockchain.
The goal is to make operations take less than one second without sacrificing scalability, security, and decentralization.
As a result, we have found three directions that together give the desired effect.
1. Level 1 (L1)
The main change is the new consensus Catchain 2.0.
It replaces the current combination of Catchain + BCP and is based on modern protocols Simplex and Alpenglow, adapted for TON.
In simpler terms, this is how validators agree with each other and accept new blocks.
With the new consensus, block finalization takes 200–400 milliseconds instead of ~2.5 seconds previously, at the same level of security.
Regarding security, an additional plus of these protocols is that they are well-known, making them easier to audit.
The second important change is the new block broadcast network protocol (two-step broadcast).
We have reduced the block delivery time between nodes in the network from 700 milliseconds to ~100 milliseconds.
Additional optimizations have also been made in the C++ implementation of the TON node:
— block compression during transmission,
— parallel validation,
— data exchange between validators not only through RLDP2, but also via TCP or QUIC. Based on test results, a transition to one of these protocols is possible.
At the same time, we have improved internal statistics, benchmarking, and measurement tools for the blockchain and API.
2. API
We have optimized the Toncenter API. Now, the operation status through Streaming API V2 arrives with a delay of 30–100 milliseconds.
In addition, there are more operation statuses:
confirmed — the block has appeared in the shardchain,
finalized — the block has been accepted into the masterchain.
Previously, there was only one status — finalized.
3. UX
An operation with a confirmed status has less than 1% probability of rollback, so applications can display it to the user immediately, without making them wait.
The user can immediately continue with the next operations, and later the application will simply mark that the operation has been finally finalized.
In essence, this is an analogue of block confirmations in other blockchains: the operation is visible after the first block, and full finalization occurs later.
This is a good addition to the instant pending operations that we made in the UX update.
All parts are ready separately. Now we are collecting them together and will begin testing in the TON test network.
