What are poles in 3D modeling?

There are two common types of poles, N-poles (3 edges connected to a vertex) & Epoles (5 edges connected to a vertex

Each of which help control and direct our flow of topology to help distributed edge loops and enable us to have better control over the placement of support loops for defining the creasing of our edges.
