They gave my 14 yo sister The catcher in the rye as a summer reading in school.
I loved that book as a teenager and now I'm sad cause I know she's not gonna like it.
How can she? She's too young and didn't choose it. It's a book written in the 50s with a very peculiar language and register. The themes are so far from the teenagers of today.
It's always "young people don't read anymore" and never "young people struggle to read cause the school system is more focused on what they think is good literature than they focus about the actual possibility for a young person to enjoy and relate to a book"

Also as a former literature student who loved plenty of classics but mostly enjoys horror, how is it bad if it's genre literature? Why can't it be young adults and fantasy? Why is it necessary to be snobs?
I wouldn't have read Carmilla if I didn't start from Twilight
And even if I kept reading romance young adults novels, why would it be worse than not reading at all?
