Alibaba lays off more than 35% of its investment team amid ongoing regulatory crackdowns

Major cuts are being made at Alibaba amid an ongoing crackdown by regulators in China.

It was reported early Thursday morning that "more than a third" of the company's internal deals team is being cut due to Beijing's regulatory crackdown, significantly slowing the pace of deal-making for the company, Reuters said .

The company's investment team, which included more than 110 people, will be reduced to about 70, according to four people familiar with the matter. The company has already informed workers of the news, the report said.

Alibaba had made an average of about 44 investments each year from 2015 to 2021. Its activities peaked in 2017, when the company made 70 deals with a total value of $54 billion.

The team was once as large as 150 people in 2016, when Chinese companies went on a global asset buying spree.

Mid- and senior-level people on the mainland will be most affected by the news, and the company also has employees in Hong Kong doing deals. The company did not comment when asked by Reuters.

Reuters wrote that Chinese regulators had imposed new fines on Alibaba as recently as Sunday for "failing to comply with anti-monopoly rules on transaction disclosure." The crackdown has "severely slowed sales" for many of the affected companies.

The report noted that Tencent, one of the company's competitors, also planned to cut tens of thousands of jobs this year in what was one of the largest rounds of layoffs ever. Tencent cited regulatory crackdowns alongside China's ongoing war on Covid.

ByteDance, another technology name, also laid off members of its investment team in January, it was reported. They, too, pointed to China's regulatory crackdown, which began in late 2020 with the goal of preventing the country's tech giants and brash entrepreneurs like Jack Ma from growing too fast and too far.

Alibaba began more layoffs in February and could cut up to 15% of its total workforce, the report concluded.

Putin and Saudi crown prince talk oil

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman discussed the oil market in a phone call Thursday, the Kremlin said.

The call comes less than a week after Saudi Arabia's de facto ruler met with visiting U.S. President Joe Biden.

Putin and Prince Mohammed discussed "in detail the situation on the international oil market. They stressed the importance of strengthening cooperation in OPEC+," the Kremlin said in a statement.

The Saudi Arabia-led OPEC oil cartel has been working for several years with a number of other oil-exporting nations, including Russia, to better control the oil market.

The group, called OPEC+, introduced production cuts during the coronavirus pandemic , which helped the oil market recover from a sub-zero price plunge.

OPEC+ nations have gradually reversed these cuts, but the end of covid restrictions in most countries has led to a recovery in demand.

With Russia's military operation in Ukraine also triggering supply concerns, oil prices have briefly risen above $120 per barrel this year.

The Kremlin statement said Putin and Prince Mohammed noted with satisfaction that cooperation among OPEC+ members has made it possible to "maintain the necessary balance and stability in the global energy market."

The call comes as global energy markets have been marked by volatility, with traders swinging between concerns about supply and worries that a global recession will suppress demand.

The International Energy Agency warned last week that oil supply may not keep pace with demand next year.

The Kremlin said Putin also spoke about the summit earlier this week in Tehran that brought together Iranian, Russian and Turkish leaders - three countries involved in the Syrian conflict that erupted in 2011.
