Honestly, some people have zero survival instincts.

I’ve seen so many posts like “how not to die here”, yet you lot are jumping over fences you can’t see over, looting without checking behind you, sprinting everywhere, making unnecessary noise, standing still in open areas, and just generally showing zero common sense then wondering why you die. What’s going on here, guys?

My humble starter base. Power just got shut off, but water’s still unlimited for now. Hoping to grab a generator magazine soon. Also got lucky and found a sledgehammer head literally in the garbage lol

Never tried to weaponize vehicles before, decided to test it. 10/10 efficiency, never going to do that ever again

Serious Question: How do I stop being so scared while playing?

I have 500+ hours in Project Zomboid and I love this game to death… but I am an absolute nervous wreck while playing it. I’m constantly tense and get startled way too easily. I’ve done playthroughs with strong characters and low zombie counts, which helps, but I actually want a real challenge. I started a new run today and had to take a break after about an hour because I was so on edge. I’ve tried putting stuff on in the background, but I feel like I have to hear the game clearly to avoid more jumpscares. I genuinely love Zomboid and have a ton of fun with it, but being this stressed every session is getting old. Any advice from less cowardly survivors is appreciated lol.

Now that B42 is out we badly need an overhaul of old skills and systems

With Build 42 introducing complex crafting and animal husbandry, the gap between new mechanics and old, neglected skills has become massive. Some core systems haven't been touched in years and feel obsolete.

Here are the main offenders that need a rework:

Cooking: Currently, it’s mostly a roleplay skill. You can easily survive on scavenged chips and canned food forever with zero penalties.
Long-term Buffs: A complex, hot home-cooked meal should provide significant benefits, not just a short "Well Fed" moodle that disappears after one sprint. Buffs should last 12-24 hours and provide bonus to carry weight, strength, endurance, speed for a duration that allows you to actually benefit from them.

First Aid & Pharmacology: The health system is too binary and lacks depth.
Wounds: Wound infections are trivial, you slap a bandage on and ignore it. It heals anyway. Neglected wounds should lead to sepsis, fever, and severe pain that cripples combat effectiveness.
Diseases: Currently, "sickness" is usually just a minor cold that goes away on its own. We need real non-zombie threats: real diseases that threatens survival. You should actually need to find or craft herbal medicines, to survive them.
Medication: Because diseases are so weak, scavenging for meds is rarely a priority. A proper disease system would finally make looting pharmacies or scavenging for herbs a critical part of the gameplay loop..

Electrical: Arguably the most useless skill beyond level 1 (hotwiring) or level 3 (generators). Levelling it up is a mindless grind of dismantling digital watches.
Base Engineering: Allow crafting of functional base upgrades: motion sensors, cameras, remote gate openers, solar systems etc. The game Rust is a nice example how nice can proper electrical systems look like.

Trapping: With actual animals introduced in B42, the old tray/box trap system could use a overhaul.
Integration: Add pit traps or snares for larger game.
