Meta About the GTA III - Definitive Edition situation.

GTA III - Definitive Edition was available for free (possibly due to a mistake) some hours ago and many readers here must have copped the deal. Well that deal cannot be claimed anymore and the game is back to a price tag of $19.99.

This was not a planned free promotion by Rockstar (because it ended too soon for a planned promotion) and it was not advertised anywhere on their official social media channels. They were likely shifting the app to a ‘try now, buy later’ pricing model like Bully and GTA Chinatown Wars, but the price change happened before the app update with the necessary changes could be issued (again this is just a theory about their intentions).

For now the game is back to being to an upfront paid app so whatever their plan was, is currently on hold.

If you claimed the game during the free promotion then download it on your iOS device and keep it that way, plus turn off automatic app updates to avoid downloading the next update. iOS only allows disabling auto updates for everything (under Settings > AppStore > App Updates) and not just one app.

There’s no guarantee still that you will be able to keep this game in the long term because Rockstar has many methods at their disposal to take away your access to this game, but keeping the app downloaded and disabling app updates is your best bet if you want to play it now.

Meta Final update regarding the GTA 3 Definitive Edition situation - Rockstar has mostly revoked access to the game but you are allowed to play if you had started a game already.

Latest update for GTA III - Definitive Edition (version 1.84.1) will revoke access for anyone who claimed it while it was accidentally free and hadn’t downloaded it before the latest update was issued. The game will now offer a 30 minutes free trial or $19.99 as an in-app purchase for full access.

There are reports that if you have started the game on the previous version 1.84.0, that is if you have: downloaded the additional data for the game (that is you had reached the main menu) and/or played for a minute or two after the first cutscene (can’t say exactly which of these two conditions is necessary) and kept the game installed (necessary), then the latest update will not revoke your access to the game as long as it is installed (or until it breaks due to any compatibility issues with new iOS updates in the future). —> Edited with the latest information from the comments below.

Therefore, if you were already playing it and the game automatically got updated to the latest version then there’s no need to panic, you will be able to finish what you have started. Starting a new save is also free as people have reported below.

If you had disabled automatic updates as I suggested before and are currently planning on finishing the game then don’t update to the latest version and keep playing it as long as it lasts. Although the new update won’t immediately revoke access in this case, it’s an unnecessary risk nonetheless and Rockstar may decide to issue another update to revoke acces completely after all. Play the game to your satisfaction and then decide whether to enable automatic updates again or not.

Also note that in either of the above two cases, if you delete/uninstall the game then your free access will be lost permanently and you will need to pay for the game. Same goes for downloading the game on another device of yours now, the free access won’t be provided on any kind of new installation.
